IABO 2021 Sample Questions

The document discusses antigen presenting cells (APCs) such as macrophages and B cells, which bind and present antigens to activate the adaptive immune system. Macrophages and B cells phagocytose or endocytose pathogens, destroy them in lysosomes, and present peptide fragments on MHC II to activate T cells. The document then asks readers to write a public article on APCs and determine if four statements about APCs, macrophages, B cells, and the thymus are true or false.

IABO 2021 Sample Questions

Problem :
Attention to the mechanism of Adaptive Immune System Activity below. APCs (antigen
presenting cells) are cells that are capable of binding to antigens and presenting protein
fragments of that antigen. Macrophages and B cells are APC cells (antigen presenting cells).
Macrophages work by eating pathogens through the process of phagocytosis, while B cells
through receptor-mediated endocytosis. The antigen taken by the two cells, both macrophages
and B cells, is destroyed in a cell organelle called Lysosomes and then the peptide fragments
of the antigen are presented using MHC II to the cell surface.

Based on the concept above, then:

1. Write a scientific article that is easily understood by the general public regarding the
concept of APC (antigen presenting cell)
2. Determine whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE and explain:
a. Disturbances in the development of macrophage cells can interfere with the
development of the innate and adaptive immune systems
b. Damage to the thymus gland can reduce the innate and adaptive immune system
c. Both events in the image above occur on the infected tissue
d. B cells recognize pathogens more specifically than macrophage cells
