Lecture Notes - Evs Unit - 1

The document discusses environmental studies and the need for public awareness. It defines key terms like environment, environmental science, environmental engineering, and environmental studies. Environmental studies examine major environmental issues, identify root causes, develop problem-solving skills, and promote cooperation to solve problems. The scope of environmental studies includes creating environmental awareness and sensitivity, motivating participation in protection and improvement, and developing skills to identify and solve problems. Public awareness is important because developmental activities can cause issues like land degradation, deforestation, and pollution. Methods to create public awareness include forming pressure groups, acting as watchdogs, serving as advisory councils, and enforcing environmental laws.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
UNIT – 1

MULTIDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

ENVIRONMENT

Environmental science is the study of nature and the facts about environment.
Environment can be defined as "all the social, economical, physical and
chemical factors that surrounds man" or "all abiotic and biotic components
around man-all living and non living things surrounds man".

 Environ (French) - surrounding

 Each & everything around us is called environment.

Environmental Science

Environmental science is the study of the environment, its biotic & abiotic
componenents & their relationship.

Environmental Engineering

Environmental Engineering is the application of engineering principles to the

protection & enhancement of the quality of the environment and to the
enhancement and protection of public health & welfare.

Environmental Studies (or) Environmental education

Environmental studies are the process of educating the people for preserving
quality of the environment.

CONCEPTS

According to ancient man the environment was the Panchaboodhas (i.e.) air,
water, land, sky and energy.
The human were disciples of nature. They were able to protect themselves from
harmful one and protect the others. But according to modern man the
environment is only air land and water.

Exploitation of various earth resources to satisfy the increasing needs of human

population has resulted in 1) depletion of various resources of earth 2) pollution.
Principles of environmental education:

 Examine the major environmental issues

 Discover the root cause
 Develop problem solving skills
 Promote co-operation in solving problems
 Emphasis active participation in prevention and solution to problems

SCOPE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

1) To get an awareness & sensitivity to the total environment & its related
problems.
2) To motivate the active participation in environmental protection &
improvement.
3) Developing skills to identify & solve environmental related problems.
4) To know the necessity of conservation of natural resources.
5) To evaluate environmental programmes in terms of social, economic,
ecological & aesthetic factors.
6) To promote the value & necessity of local, national & international co-
operation in the prevention & solution for environmental problems.
7) To give a clear picture about the current potential of resources &
environmental situations.
8) Environmental studies gives idea & understanding all the interdependent
of nature & people.
IMPORTANCE (OR) SIGNIFICANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

 Environmental studies have a direct relation to the quality of life we live.

 People will understand the concept of need of development without
destruction of environment.
 People gain knowledge of different types of environment & effects of
different environmental hazards.
 Inform people about their effective role in protecting the environment by
demanding changes in laws & enforcement systems.
 It develops a concern & respect for the environment
NEED FOR PUBLIC AWARENESS (OR) COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Developmental activities cause problems like

 Land degradation
 Water scarcity
 Deforestation
 Loss of biodiversity
 Loss of fertile soil
 Urbanisation
 Population growth
 Effluent & smoke discharge from industries
 Industrialisation

Thus it reduces the quality of environment. Therefore Public awareness is

needed to

1) Protect the atmosphere from global warming & O3 layer depletion.

2) Protect the land resources from desertification deforestation.

3) Awareness regarding various diseases & damages caused to living being due
to pollution.

4) Management of hazardous waste.

5) Prevent illegal movement of toxic & wastes.

6) Improve living standard.

7) Check environmental degradation

8) Create awareness about the fact that population explosion is the

major cause for environmental pollution.

9) Know the impact of deforestation on our lives.

10) Know the importance of unpolluted air, water & land.

11) Create awareness regarding natural calamities like cyclone, food,

earthquake, and tsunami
METHODS OF CREATING PUBLIC AWARENESS

1) Pressure group

The public ‘pressure group’ may be formed to influence the government on one
hand & the industries on the other hand.

2) Watch dog

The public can act as ‘watch dog’ to protect the interests of public against
environmental hazardous activities.

3) Advisory Council

The public can act as advisory council & agencies, which is constituted to keep
the environment suitable for living.

4) Enforcing the Environmental laws

The services of public can be utilized to enforce the environmental laws. If

necessary the member of public should conduct public interest litigations.
