HYDROUSTATIC PRESSURE
1) A circular plate of 2 m diameter immersed vertically in liquid having sp. gravity 0.8., so
that the center of plate is 3.5 m below free surface. Determine the total pressure and center
of pressure.
2) A concrete dam 12 m deep and 2 m wide containing water to a depth of 10 m. Find total
hydrostatic pressure per meter run and center of pressure on upstream face.
3) Define pressure diagram for vertical contact surface with neat sketch and mention two
applications of it.
4) A circular plate of 4 m diameter is immersed in water such that its greatest and least depth
below the free surface of water are 5 m and 3 m respectively. Calculate (i) Total pressure
on one face of plate (ii) The position of center of pressure.
5) Find the intensity of pressure in N/m2 on the base of container when, (i) water stands to a
height of 1.25 m in it (ii) when oil for 0.625 m ht. stands on water of 1 m.ht. Draw
pressure diagrams to all cases.
6) A partition wall 3 m long divides storage tank. On one side there is turpentine of Sp.
Gr.0.87 upto a depth of 3.5 m. On the other side there is paraffin oil of Sp. Gr. 0.8 stored
to a depth of 2.5 m. Determine resultant pressure on partition wall.
7) State Pascal’s law and its practical applications.
8) A rectangular plate is 2 m wide and 3 m deep. It lies in vertical plane in water. Find total
pressure and position of C.P. on the plate when its upper edge is horizontal and - (i)
coincides with water and (ii) 2.5 m below free water surface.
9) A triangular plate having 1 m base and 1.8 m altitude is immersed in water. The plane of
plate is inclined at 30° with free surface of water and base is parallel to and at a depth of 2
m from water surface. Find pressure acting on the plate and its center of pressure.
10) Explain the concept and use of pressure diagram with neat sketches.

11) Determine the total pressure and Centre of pressure on an isosceles triangular plate of
base 4 m and altitude 4 m when it is immersed vertically in an oil of sp.gr 0.9. The base of
the plate coincides with the free surface of oil.
12) A circular plate 3.0 m diameter is immersed in water in such a way that its greatest and
least depth below the free surface are 4 m and 1.5 m respectively. Determine the total
pressure on one face of the plate and position of the Centre of pressure.
13) Define total hydrostatic pressure and Centre of pressure. Draw diagram to describe it.
14) A masonry dam 8 m high and 3.5 m wide has water level 1 m below its top. Calculate (i)
Total pressure on one meter length of dam. (ii) Depth of Centre of pressure.
15) A circular plate 2.5 m diameter is immersed in oil of specific gravity 0.9 such that its
greatest and least depth below the free surface oil 3.0 m and 1 m. Calculate (i) Total
pressure on one surface of plate. (ii) Depth of Centre of pressure.
16) A concrete dam of rectangular section 15 m deep and 8 m wide containing water up to 13
m. Find (i) total pressure of water on 1m length. (ii) depth of Centre of pressure above
base. (iii) the point at which resultant cuts the base.
17) A circular plate of 4 m diameter is immersed vertically in water so that its upper edge is 1
m below the water. The plate is having a triangular hole which has a base of 80 cm and
height of 60 cm in such a position that its vertex coincides with the Centre of plate as
shown in Fig. Find total pressure acting on the plate and its Centre of pressure.
