Beware of Plagiarism
By: Monijean F. Espeleta

Have you had your pen, paper, or any belonging stolen from you?
Have you experienced someone stealing your lunchbox and eating your
food without permission? How did you feel? I bet you were angry
because someone got something without asking permission from you,
right? No matter how small or big the stolen object is, getting it without
the owner’s permission is not okay. It is also the same when you use and
copy the ideas of others and make them yours without asking permission.
It is stealing! People must not steal words or ideas, too! This is why
stealing or copying the ideas of others is prohibited. If you borrow ideas
from a source, you must acknowledge or give credit to its writer or you
will commit plagiarism. Cite the source by writing it down in the
bibliography or sometimes referred to as Works Cited.
Discussion Questions:

1. Is re-writing plagiarism too?

- According to plagiariasm.com, many believe that the safest
way to avoid plagiarism is to simply rewrite and restate
everything in paper. If you copy or rewrite without providing
the contribution of the original author is already one.

2. Why is there a need to cite resources or references?

- MIT Libraries.com cited on their website that there is a
need for us to cite resources or references for the following
reasons:
 To show your reader you’ve done proper research by
listing sources you used to get your information
 To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other
researchers and acknowledging their ideas
 To avoid plagiarism by quoting words and ideas used by
other authors.
 To allow your reader to track down the sources you
used by citing them accurately in your paper by way of
footnotes, a bibliography or reference list

Let’s Discuss!

What is Bibliography?
The Merriam - Webster dictionary defines bibliography as a list of all the
different sources that you use to support your topic. It contains a list of books or
articles, or both, relating to a particular subject. In a research paper, a
bibliography is an alphabetical list, sometimes grouped into categories,
containing the names of all works quoted from or generally used in its
preparation. Bibliographical items should be arranged correctly and consistently.

What are some “sources or references” your teacher might ask you to
use?

Textbooks/ Books Newspaper World Wide Web

Take note that these resources can also be found on the internet – digital
newspapers and digital books.
How to format entries in the bibliography
1. List your sources alphabetically based on the surname of authors.
2. Use periods to separate the publication details
3. List entire books or a complete chapter or article you referred to.
4. Use the hanging indention (the first line of an entry begins on the
margin and all the other lines are indented) in listing your entries.

Citing a Book
1. Last Name, First Name. title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher,
Publication Date.

- The City of Publication should not be used if the book was published
before 1900, if the publisher has offices in more than one country, or
if the publisher is unknown.

Citing a Newspaper Article in Print

1. Author, A. (Year, Month Date of Publication). Article title.
Newspaper Title, pp. xx-xx.

World Wide Web Citation

1. Author or editor’s last name (if an author is given), first name, middle
initial (if any).
2. “Title of the Page” ( in quotation marks)

5. Publisher or sponsor of the site (if not given n.p.)
6. Date of publication (day, month, and year, as available).
7. Medium of publication (Web)
