Assignment 01 MSD 17mte23

This document outlines an assignment for a mechatronics system design course. It includes questions about sensors for monitoring water flow, air pressure, displacement, and temperature. It also asks the reader to draw block diagrams for a clothes washer, temperature control system, anti-lock braking system, automatic coffee maker, and machine tool axes motion. Finally, it asks the reader to sketch a block diagram for a liquid temperature control system and explain how an error signal is produced.

Mechatronics System Design

Assignment# 01
Due Date: August 15, 2021

1. Suggest sensors which could be used in the following situations:

a) To monitor the rate at which water flows along a pipe and given an electrical signal
related to the flow rate.
- HYDAC EVS 3100 & EVS 3110 (Sensor)
The HSI sensors are recognized automatically via the HSI interface by the above-
mentioned HYDAC measuring instruments, and all the necessary basic settings are taken from
each instrument. As with all flow rate transmitters in the series EVS 3100 and EVS 3110, the EVS
31x0-H also operates according to the turbine principle. The speed of an impeller turning in the
fluid flow is measured and converted into an electronic signal.
b) To monitor the pressure in a pressurized air pipe, giving a visual display of the pressure.
- Bourns’ BPS125 (Sensor)
Bourns' BPS125 series pressure sensor is based on Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) technology.
The BPS125 is 3.3V capable and is calibrated for pressure ranges from 250Pa to 1PSI. Designed for
advanced sensor needs in industrial automation, energy, building and home control, medical
(low/medium risk) and military applications, the BPS125 line has been designed to provide high
sensitivity/accuracy, long-term reliability and ultra-low pressure sensing with a digital output (I2C). The
BPS125 pressure sensor delivers extremely accurate ultra-low pressure sensing capabilities for sensitive
applications. This sensor family offers fully calibrated and compensated output for more efficient
processes, as well as long-term stability for reliable repeatability.
c) To monitor the displacement of a rod and give a voltage output.
- LD620 DC voltage output displacement Sensor:
The LD620 DC output displacement transducers have improved IP67- rated sealing, coupled with
new polymer guides with rigid carriers. These transducers are accurate and reliable, especially in
wet and corrosive conditions. Output options are either ±5 Vdc (LD620) or 0-10 Vdc (LD621). An
unusually large bore-to-core clearance is maintained throughout the range. This makes
installation easier and helps prevent misalignment on automation actuators and other industrial
automation controls.
d) To monitor a rapidly changing temperature.
- The Thermostat:
The Thermostat is a contact type electro-mechanical temperature sensor or switch, that
basically consists of two different metals such as nickel, copper, tungsten or aluminum etc, that
are bonded together to form a Bi-metallic strip. The different linear expansion rates of the two
dissimilar metals produces a mechanical bending movement when the strip is subjected to heat.
The bi-metallic strip can be used itself as an electrical switch or as a mechanical way of operating
an electrical switch in thermostatic controls and are used extensively to control hot water
heating elements in boilers, furnaces, hot water storage tanks as well as in vehicle radiator
cooling systems.

2. Even if you were not explicitly aware of it, you use Mechatronic devices regularly.
a) Draw functional block diagram to explain the operation of a clothes washer.
(on page # 2)

3. Understand the purpose of the following mechatronic system and recommend

appropriate sensor and actuator to carry out the specified task.
a) Temperature Control System
Purpose: To maintain the temperature of a confined space at the specified temperature.
(Hint: Decide how to sense the temperature. Decide how to increase or decrease
temperature.)
- The temperature control system consists of following components:
Sensor (The Bi-metallic Thermostat)
Actuator (Heater)
The Controller (Arduino/Pi)
The sensor will sense temperature and sends to controller and controller will calculate the
difference between set value and process variable and according to results will send the signal to
actuator to run.
b) Anti-Lock Braking System
Purpose: To prevent wheels from locking up by automatically modulating the brake pressure
during an emergency stop.
(Hint: Decide how to sense that the wheels are locked, i.e., the wheels are not rolling. Decide
how to apply or release brakes.)
There are four major components of a typical anti-lock braking system are:

2
- Speed sensors: These sensors monitor how fast the wheel or wheels are rotating
- Valves: Valves in the brake line allow, block and release pressure on the brakes by
assuming three different positions.
- Pump: These pumps are filled with hydraulic fluid and apply pressure to the brake
drums or calipers on demand.
- Controller: The electronic control unit (ECU) is the brain of the ABS and uses data
from the sensors to determine whether or not to pump the brakes.
4. Figure-01 shows a block diagram of an automotive cruise control system. This helps the
driver in monitoring and controlling the speed.

Figure 1 Automotive Speed Control System

Draw similar diagrams for the following applications by showing the modules of instrumentation
System.
a) Automatic coffee maker for home use

b) Motion of axes in a machine tool

5. The automatic control system for the temperature of a bath of liquid consists of a reference
voltage fed into a differential amplifier. This is connected to a relay, which then switches on
or off the electrical power to a heater in the liquid. Negative feedback is provided by a
measurement system, which feeds a voltage into the differential amplifier. Sketch a block
diagram of the system and explain how the error signal is produced.
