decorative arts: these belong to the branch of visual arts called contemporary art forms. Contemporary art
forms include recently conceived art styles and techniques that are experimental in nature. These partially
include; Assemblage, Installation, Collage, Performance Art, Digital Art, Land Art and Conceptual Art. It should
be emphasize that there is a difference between contemporary art forms and contemporary art.

Example:

Assemblage - is an artistic form or medium usually created on a defined substrate that consists of three-
dimensional elements projecting out of or from the substrate. It is similar to collage, a two-dimensional
medium. It is part of the visual arts, and it typically uses found objects, but is not limited to these materials.

Collage - include magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of colored or handmade papers,
portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.

Land Art - variously known as Earth art, environmental art, and Earthworks, the materials used were often the
materials of the Earth including for instance the soil and rocks and vegetation and water found on-site.

Activity Instruction:
On a short bond paper, create a brief report or research on a contemporary art form. It may be an art form
not mentioned in this lesson. The report should include the art form’s characteristics, history, artists and a
picture of an example artwork of the form.

Activity Title: DECODING
Learning Targets: 1. Clarify the use of materials and the application of techniques in contemporary visual arts.
References Title: JOURNEY: Contemporary Arts of the Philippines
Phoenix Publishing Company, by: Arch. Carlo Luis C. Guanzon p. 155-157
Main Idea to be learned - Materials used in Contemporary Arts

Contemporary artists feel free to experiment with materials and use technology to explore possibilities. Contemporary
artists save materials that can be recycled and made into creative forms. They can make artworks that combine
structure and wood and interest with the wind to make music.
1. Canvass – the most common material use in painting
2. INDIGENOUS MATERIALS like textiles, paper, used clothing and personal accessories
3. In architecture, there is extensive use of glass and steel. Color combination is either complementary or strong
contrasting, such as orange and blue, red and white.
4. Technology has also redefined art in many ways. Because of the usefulness of new materials to art-making,
artists have to upgrade their skills and learn the use of computer programs and its applications. The availability
and variety materials and the possibilities offered by technology expand the choices of artists.
Some examples are:
• Light structures and floor drawings using colored laser beams and smokes
• Tubes hanging on the ceiling that respond to the viewer’s movement, sound and touch
• A wall climbing robot holding a paint
• A pen controlled by a software program to create certain patterns.
• Welding is also used for fabrication and building structure.
• Some materials have chemical components that are hazardous to the health such as acids, resin and fiberglass.

Main Idea to be Learned: TECHNIQUES USED IN CONTEMPORARY ART

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TECHNIQUES THAT ARTIST CAN CHOOSE FROM:

1. COLLAGE – is made by adhering flat elements such as newspaper or magazine cut-outs, printed text,
illustrations, photographs, cloth, string, etc. to a flat surface to create a thick layer that is almost like a relief
sculpture.

2. DECALCOMANIA – is the process of applying gouache to paper or glass then transferring a reversal of that image
onto canvas or other flat materials.

3. DECOUPAGE – is done by adhering cut-outs of paper and then coating these with one or more coats or
transparent coating of varnish.

4. FROTTAGE – is the technique of rubbing with crayon on a piece of paper which has been placed over an
object or an image. The impression of the image can be created using leaves, wood, wire screen or
metal with embossed image or words.

5. MONTAGE – is used for photography or film where a pictorial image is placed overlapping to make
another picture or design.

6. TRAPUNTO - A puffy, decorative feature, trapunto utilizes at least two layers, the underside of which is
slit and padded, producing a raised surface on the quilt.

7. DIGITAL APPLICATIONS –  In an expanded sense, "digital art“ is contemporary art that uses the methods
of mass production or digital media.
Examples:

Main Idea to be Learned: TECHNIQUES USED IN CONTEMPORARY ART

COLLAGE – is the method of combining printed images with other flat media and passing and pasting them on
a canvass or board. This contemporary art method first came about in the early 1900’s as part of the
experimentation of the cubist Picasso and Braque. They made use of cutouts of newspaper that were pasted
onto their paintings. Collages create a great variety of texture and color not found in traditional painting.

Example

Activity:

Choose any picture in relation to nature or anything that interest you. Then make a collage out of it. Use
magazine cutouts to produce a variety of texture and color. You may use 1/8 size illustration board as your
canvass.
