Independence Day
In Peru, people celebrate Independence Day on July 28th, commemorating the liberation of Peru from
Spain by José de San Martin.

It’s a long holiday, the following day, July 29th celebrates establishment of the Republic of Perú.
Together (July 28th and July 29th) these two days are called Las Fiestas Patrias and they are by far
the most important national holidays in Peru.

July 28th celebrations often take place outdoors. In every city around Peru, the Plaza de Armas are
full of festivities and excitement.

The night before the big day, streets are be filled with Criolla music and small parties. However, during
the day, there are parades with marching bands, traditional food fairs, concerts and dances. Also,
People wave Peruvian flags in their houses and in every building.

Additionally, the president makes a speech for the Peruvians. But, the most spectacular part of the
day comes late in the evening, where big fireworks are displayed to celebrate Independence Day.
