Issues and Concerns of Philippine Education Through The Years, My Reaction Paper

For over 300 years, the Philippines was conquered by Spain and its people were uneducated and illiterate. This made them easy to subjugate. Later, American and Japanese conquerors also emphasized the importance of education to enable self-governance. After World War 2, the Philippines gained independence but many lives were lost attaining it. Successive Philippine administrations have prioritized education in the national budget but issues around access and quality remain. Addressing the country's educational challenges requires collaboration between the government and other stakeholders.

ISSUES AND CONCERNS OF PHILIPPINE EDUCATION

THROUGH THE YEARS

For more than 300 years our country was conquered. For more than 300 years,

our forefathers became a slave by the powerful and oppressive Spaniards. We became

menials and vassals into our own land not because of it was our fate but rather due to

lack of education and analphabetism. We were blinded by their “cross”, yet it was a

sharp-edged and pointed sword that struck into our hearts and souls. However, as

time passed by, we were enlightened by some of the few, chosen, and elite individuals

who used to be our fallen heroes. We learned to stand and fight for our right with them,

armored with bolos of bravery and shield of patriotism seeking for justice and

independence. Yet, we cannot deny the fact that most of our forefathers were still a

fearless uneducated.

The conquest of the Americans in the Philippines became the dawn of

education.in the country. It was the topmost priority of our so called “big brother” to

provide basic education to all especially to our native forefathers. One of their main goal

was to prepare us to become an independent and educated Filipinos, to be capable in

governing the country.

Another conqueror came, the Japanese who invaded the country. Though their

tenure here was short but reiterated the importance of education and the naivety of

having a pro-Asian character. Then years after the World War II, we were liberalized,

the Americans gave our independence. We have now our own government, our own

leaders, our own identity, and our own country. But we cannot deny the fact that this

independence is very luxurious, for it cost thousands or even million lives of filipinos

who fought for our freedom, our independence. We owe it to them, and we appreciate

the value of education as an integral part.

Different administrations may have passed, mostly of them give importance

towards education. For education is the key towards nation building. In fact, one of

highest percentage that they received from the National Budget goes to Education.

However, despite of the significant attention given by the government, there are still

underlying concerns and issues towards education. As being stated by the two authors

in the article (Durban and Catalan), factors that being discussed are evident into our

country. I totally agree on the issues and concerns that are being presented and as well

the resolutions being introduced. I highly appreciate the brilliant minds of the authors.

I would also like to add up that Education is a key towards national development.

And everyone must be involved. We cannot do it alone, the government cannot do that

on their own, even If they spend most of our budget. They need a helping hand in the

private sectors and other stakeholders. To attain the national development, it needs to

have a total collaborative effort, and everyone has a significant role.
