Introduction to Philosophy of Education

Direction: Answer the following comprehensively. (5pts.each)

1. Describe education in your own words.

Education for me is a continuous and a lifelong learning process. It has

a beginning, but its wisdom never ends. It begins from the moment that we

are born in this world, and it will last through the lifetime. At birth, from

being viewed as having no innate ideas also known as “tabula rasa”. Then,

we learn the basics from our environment and experiences, and as we grow

older, we become a knowledgeable, skillful, and wise person. Education

plays a vital role towards human development. And it is being passed from

one generation to another.

2. Why should a teacher study philosophy of education?

Studying the philosophy of education makes a teacher becomes

knowledgeable and even expert on the different philosophical theories.

With that, the teacher will be able to determine easily on what are the

best philosophical theories and approaches to be apply inside his/her

classroom. For there are diversity of learners in his/her class.

3. “The scope of Philosophy of education is unlimited” Critically evaluate
this statement.
.

The philosophy of education examines the goals, forms,

methods, and meaning of education. It is so broad that makes the

Philosophy of education unlimited.

4. Discuss the relationship between Philosophy of Teaching and Teaching

styles

Philosophy of Teaching tends to answer the questions regarding the

nature of the learners, nature of subject matters, the application of

subject matter toward meaningful learning activities of students and

the behavior trends that exhibit on philosophical point of view. While

the teaching style refers to the way of teaching that is in lined and

appropriate to that philosophical point of view.

For example:

PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING: PROGRESSIVISM

nature of the learners: learning by doing, learners learn best when

pursuing their own interest.

nature of subject matter: experiential learning

application of subject matter: hands on activity, projects, group activities

behavior trends that exhibit: learning by doing, learning through experience.
