Question: John Bramblitt, one of the most famous modern American painters, has never seen
his own paintings. He lost his eyesight at the age of 30 due to the complications of epilepsy.
Having overcome depression and anxiety, he found salvation in art. The sense of touch
replaced his vision, and he developed a special technique for creating paintings. He makes a
sketch with matte paint, leaving a tangible mark on the canvas, and then he finds the required
area on the protruding contours and fills it with paint. John chooses paints and creates shades
through the use of touch as well’ (Bright Side, 2021).
Explain Bramblitt’s motivation and intelligence .
Answer: Intelligence by definition means when facing a situation, intelligence is described as
the ability to comprehend the world, think rationally, and use resources effectively. There are
various types of intelligence such as fluid and crystallized, practical intelligence and
emotional intelligence etc.
On the other hand, motivation is derived from the word 'motive,' which refers to an
individual's needs, desires, wishes, or drives. It is the method of inspiring people to take
action in order to achieve a series of objectives. In the context of a job goal, psychological
factors that affect people's actions include: Desire for money, success, recognition, job
satisfaction etc.
According to the case John Bramblitt who can paint with special techniques and through the
use of touch has developed a fantastic skill by practicing painting in such a way. As a result,
John Bramblitt has used crystallized intelligence where John aggregated information, skills
and strategies with the help of his experience of painting. So due to he lost his eyesight which
indeed is a problem for him but crystallized intelligence has helped him in this tough situation
to carry out the problem and solve the problem. Moreover, motivation is also playing a vital
role here. John definitely gets motivated once he can carry out the task effectively which
helps him to do it further more. According to the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs the top level in
the hierarchy is self-actualization where it gives the feeling of self-fulfillment. John Bramblitt
has achieved self-actualization as he has used his talent to the fullest in a unique way that has
motivated him to continue this in the foreseeable future.
Even though John Bramblitt was depressed and was suffering from anxiety but his
intelligence has helped him a lot to overcome such dark situations in his life and here his
success also played a vital role that has kept John Bramblitt motivated towards his salvation in
art.
