Science Fair Project: Topic Ideas

A student is proposing a science fair project on recycling home practices and innovations from recycled materials. The student chose this topic because global warming is a major concern, and better waste management, including recycling more plastics, could help address it. Currently, Canada only recycles 8% of plastics. The student hopes to find ways for kids to put recycled home waste to productive use through scientific projects and participate in responsible waste management. The scientific question chosen is "What part can I play in recycling?" and the student plans to look at everyday household materials and the role of kids in waste management, creating items like weather instruments, drip irrigation, and bird feeders from recycled materials.

Science Fair Project

Part 1:
Topic ideas:
1. Recycling home practices: Interesting innovations from recycled materials.
2. Coke & Menthos: Exploring explosive science.
3. Stay safe at night: what clothes keep you safe at night?

My topic idea is:

Recycling Home Practices: Interesting Innovations from Home Recycled Materials

Why are you interested in this topic? What larger reaching impact do you hope to have?
Global warming and climate change is a big concern in the world, so serious that world leaders from
across the globe hold conferences to tackle the problem. One of the big concerns on Global warming is
waste management and in particular, waste management of plastic materials.

Canada currently only manages to recycle 8% of all plastics in the country, with the rest finding their way
to landfills and incinerators or treated as litter, which pollutes the soil and natural water bodies. My
reason for choosing a research on “Recycling home practices” is to find innovative ways that kids can use
to put recycled home waste into productive use. I believe this would be a responsible way for kids to
participate in responsible waste management and save the world from Global warming.

Possible Questions:

What should we recycle?

What part can I play in What are the benefits

recycling? of recycling?

Topic:
The scientific question I have decided upon is:
What part can I play in recycling?

I’m going to look at the every-day materials found in common households and the role kids can play in
responsible waste management. Plastics can be cleaned and used for innovative scientific projects such
as:

● Making home-made instruments of measuring weather, such as a wind vane or anemometer.

● Making drip irrigation devices for a flower garden using old plastics and straws.
● Making a bird feeder from recycled bottles or carton boxes.
● Making flower vases for science lessons including germination of seeds.
