Q.1. Glossary :

1) Sages – wise men


2) Oft – archaic word meaning often
3) Foretell – predict, forecast
4) Gloom – darkness, sadness
5) Transient – temporary
6) Lament – express grief or regret
7) Shower – rainfall
8) Merrily – happily, cheerfully
9) Cheerily – happily
10) Flit - to move quickly
11) Spring – to rise again
12) Buoyant – that which can rise upwards
13) Manfully – bravely
14) Sway – a strong influence
15) Quell – end , suppress
16) Despair – sorrow

Q.2. Pick out from the poem , two lines each that reflect an optimistic (positive) attitude and
pessimistic (negative) attitude.

Optimism: ( 1) Foretells a pleasant day.

(2) But these are transient all.

Pessimism : (1) Oft a little morning rain.

(2) Sometimes there are clouds of gloom.

Q.3. Give other ‘-ly’ adverbs of similar meaning for the following .

a) rapidly – swiftly
b) merrily – cheerfully
c) gratefully – thankfully
d) cheerily – happily
e) manfully – bravely
f) fearlessly – courageously
g) gloriously – wonderfully

Q.3. Pick out three examples of interrogation from the poem.

(a) Explain in your own words the point that each one makes.

Interrogation – Explanation

1) Oh, why lament its fall? - This means that we must not express regret or sorrow for the
difficulties we face in life.
2) What though death at times steps in, And calls our Best away? – If death ,at times takes
away the people we love most, we must accept it and hope for better times.
3) What though sorrow seems to win, O’er hope a heavy sway ? – It is alright if sorrow seems
to win sometimes.

(b) Explain the metaphor in the following lines:

(1) Oft a little morning rain


Foretells a pleasant day
Ans :Difficulties are implicitly compared to rain and joyous times to a pleasant day.
(2) Sometimes there are clouds.
Ans :Sometimes there are problems. Problems are implicitly compared to clouds.
(3) ..... the shower will make the roses bloom.
Ans: Problems are compared to the showers of rain and better times are compared
to roses blooming.
(4) Life’s sunny hours flit by
Ans :The happy times of our life go by very quickly. Here ,the happy times are
compared to sunny hours.

(C) Pick out four examples of personification. Write what is personified in each:

(1)' Death steps in'. Death is personified.

(2) ‘Sorrow seems to win'. Sorrow is personified.

(3) ‘Yet Hope again elastic springs, unconquered though she fell.’ Hope is personified.

(4)' Can courage quell despair!’ Courage is personified.
