Class Lecture - 12 Galvanic Coatings (Self Study)

Galvanic coatings are used in ship repairing to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance. The main galvanic coating processes discussed are chromium plating, nickel plating, zinc galvanizing, steel plating, and tin plating. Chromium plating provides heat resistance and appearance but is porous. Nickel plating improves hardness and corrosion resistance when topped with chromium. Zinc galvanizing protects electrochemically but is less durable in seawater. Steel plating is cheaper than other processes. Tin plating provides chemical stability but does not protect against corrosion. Safety measures for galvanic coating processes include ventilation, protective equipment, and careful handling of acids.

Section 12: Galvanic Coatings

Galvanic coatings are used in ship repairing to improve corrosion resistance and wear
resistance, to recover original dimensions, and for decorative purposes.
The processes of Galvanic coatings are:
1. Chromium plating
2. Nickel plating
3. Zinc galvanizing
4. Steel plating
5. Tin plating

Chromium Plating

Advantages:
 Chromium coatings possess high resistance to mechanical wear.
 Chemical stability.
 Fine brilliant appearance.
 Heat resistance.
Disadvantages:
 Porous texture, which makes them unsuitable for components working in a corrosive
medium.
 This could damage the base metal.
 Chromium plating is complicated & expensive.
 The coating thickness achieved in practice are small.
Uses:
 Wear-resistant chromium plating is used in ship repairing for cylinder liner, piston rings,
parts of the fuel system etc.
 Decorative chromium plating is used mainly to prevent tarnishing of base metal.

Nickel Plating
Advantages:
 Nickel coatings owing to their hardness, are used as anti-wear coatings.
 Nickel-plated parts receive a top coating of chromium to improve their corrosion
resistance.

Disadvantages:
 Special attention should be paid to the purity of the materials making up the electrolyte.
 The presence of impurities or reduction of acidity leads to deterioration of the quality of
the plating.
Uses:
 Nickel plating is used to protect the base metal against corrosion or to impart a decorative
surface or for both these purposes.
 Nickel plating can be used on steel, copper, or aluminium.

Zinc Plating
Advantages:
 Zinc coating protect the base metal electrochemically, owing to their high electric-
negative potential.
 The thicker the zinc coating, the longer its service life and the better the protection given
to the base metal.
Disadvantages:
 In sea water, owing to the presence of chlorides, the durability of zinc coatings is less
than in fresh water.
Uses:
 Ship's service installations (water discharge pipes, emergency pipes, ballast pipes, etc.).
 Used for parts of deck gear (Cargo handling, anchor fittings, etc.).
 Used for parts of ship equipment (bunk fittings, fitting in kitchen, etc.).

Steel Plating
Advantages:
 Cheaper and more readily available is the process of electrolytic deposition of iron.
Disadvantages:
 Steel plating include high bond strength of coating to the base metal, reaching 1,200
kg/cm2.
Uses:
 Can also be used for cast iron components.

 This type of plating can be recommended in ship repairing for restoring worn steel or cast
iron surfaces.
 Used in building up of surfaces and also for correcting faulty parts after manufacture.

Galvanic Tin Plating

Advantages:
 Possess a high chemical stability in the usual atmospheric conditions.
 Non-porous tin coating will afford protection from corrosion.
 Tin plating can be done galvanically. It provides advantage by lower consumption of tin,
especially when coating complicated parts, the coatings will be non-porous.
 Non-porosity of the coating improves the coating thickness.
Disadvantages:
 The potential of tin is less negative than iron, because of that tin coating will not give
electrochemical protection against corrosion.
Uses:
 Used for a good number of ship components.
 Also, used in condenser tubes, bearing before pouring white metal, dishes for cooking
food, drinking-water tanks, some parts of electric switchgear, etc.

Safety Measures Used in Galvanic Coating Processes:

Galvanic processes are associated with the release of a large amount of vapors, gases and dust,
which are harmful to the human organism, and also involve the handling of toxic materials.
The principal measures taken in galvanizing shops to protect the health of the workers are the
following:
a. Equipping the shop with general and local ventilation systems installed in the air supply
and exhaust ducting, to ensure that the harmful gases and dust are removed from the
working zone.

b. Arranging good natural and artificial lighting in the working zones.

c. Ensuring that the workers wear rubber gloves, rubber aprons, and properly fitting clothes.

d. Careful handling of acids, especially during transport and when they are poured from one
vessel into another or into the plating bath.

e. Checking the efficiency of the various holding and suspending devices, used with pickling
and galvanizing baths, to ensure that the parts will not drop into the bath, creating splashes
which may reach the worker's skin.

f. Careful lowering of tubes into the baths.

g. When preparing zinc electrolytes (by dissolving zinc in sulphuric acid) smoking and
carrying naked flames are not permitted.

h. When preparing electrolytes from sulphuric acid, the acid should be poured into water and
not vice versa.

i. Chromium plating baths should have side ventilation.

j. Grinding and polishing machines should have special ventilated guards round the grinding
or polishing wheels.

k. All precautions associated with electrical equipment should be observed.
