“Motivation for the Course”

–Why to learn this subject of Climate Modeling …

Global Warming
W E A R E P U S H I N G T H E S Y S T E M O U T O F T H E R A N G E H U M A N B E I N G S H AV E A D O P T E D T O

Temperatures in the past have been higher (and lower) than today, but the today’s CO2
concentration is much higher and the increase is occurring at a much faster rate

The rise in CO2 will probably trigger further rise in the temperature
Global Warming
T E M P E R AT U R E H A S B E E N W E L L A B O V E N O R M A L F O R M O R E T H A N T W O D E C A D E S

The warming is stronger over land than over oceans

Global Warming
ARE HUMANS THE CAUSE ?

The natural forcing (solar and volcanic) of the last 50 years would have produced cooling

Addition of the extra anthropogenic forcing (greenhouse gases and particles) can
reproduce the pattern of warming that is seen over the past century
Such Questions Could be Addressed Using
Climate Models; No theory, no observational
studies could answer such questions so
directly.
