General Concepts of Character

The term "character" derives from the Greek word meaning "engraving instrument" and originally referred to distinctive marks on coins. It was later applied to distinctive personality traits, with an individual's character comprising the sum of their characteristics. The American Psychiatric Association defines character as relatively fixed patterns of behavior and the personality attributes that make up an individual. Character formation is the process by which a person develops stable patterns of functioning, thinking, and feeling through the interaction of their innate predispositions and environmental influences, also known as character building.

General concepts of character

The term was derived from the Greek word “ charassein.” Referring to an engraving instrument,
originally used of a mark impressed upon a coin or the mark cut by it. The it was applied to a distinctive
mark of personality: and gradually, to the sum total of such marks, each individual one is being called
characteristics.

Characters as defined by the American psychiatric association, signifies the relativity fixed or continuing
2group of an individual personality attributes or a person or the characteristic pattern of behavior of an
individual, the social, emotional and intellectual of manifestation of a character are called personality,
and character is roughly equivalent to personality.

WHAT IS CHARACTER FORMATION?

what is character formation as define by Donald ( 20016) Is the process by which the individual, through
interaction of biologically transmitted predisposition with the environment, develops stable patter of
functioning, thingking and feeling. It is also know as, CHARACTER BUILDING.
