characteristics literature during pre-colonial period as
well as the representative text from the northern
region of the Philippines, the riddles and epigrams.

In the next lessons, you will be amused with the array


of selected Philippine songs and poems.

Precolonial Poetry played a


central part of community life in
villages of pre-colonial Philippines.
Short four-line poems called
Tanaga evolved from this oral
tradition.
Main Lesson:

Tanaga - is a type of Filipino poem,


consisting of four lines with seven or
eight syllables and at the heart of
the poem was a cryptic metaphor
called talinghaga.

 Lullaby or Hele is a folk song sung to


lull or put a baby or child to sleep.
Like other lullabies, “Philippine
lullabies tend to be soporific in tune
and sometimes repetitious in text.”
(Eugenio 1996)

Main Lesson:

Epic is a long narrative poem that describes the


adventures of a hero, warrior, god, or king.

Epic is influenced by the traditions, cultures, beliefs,


moral codes, and attitudes of the people who
created it.
Main Lesson:

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EPIC
1. The main character/protagonist is considered a hero.
2. The hero’s actions were presented without bias.
3. Often involves battles, which reveals the extraordinary
strength of the main character.
4. Setting may span several places even countries, or the worlds
5. Gods and other divine beings are portrayed as having a role
in the outcome of the events.

read the selections in your module then do
