Types of Text Structures

This document discusses different types of text structures: description, sequence/order, problem-solution, cause and effect, and comparison/contrast. Each structure organizes information in a specific way. Description provides details to give a mental picture. Sequence/order lists steps chronologically. PPT #3 – Types of Text Structures

TEXT STRUCTURES
• Refers to how the text is organized. For example, a
text might present a main idea and then details, a
cause and then its effects, an effect and the
causes, two different views of a topic, etc.
• Text structures can often be identified by certain
signal words.
DESCRIPTION

This type of text structure

features a detailed
description of something
to give the reader a
mental picture.
EXAMPLES: DESCRIPTION
• It was a cold grey day in late November. The weather had changed
overnight, when a backing wind brought a granite sky and a drizzling
rain with it, and although it was now only a little after two o'clock in
the afternoon the pallor of a winter evening seemed to have closed
upon the hills, cloaking them in mist.
• When you walk into my bedroom there is a window facing you. To
the right of that is a dresser and television and on the other side of the
window is my bed.
SEQUENCE/ORDER

This text structure

gives readers a
chronological of
events or a list of
steps in a
procedure.
EXAMPLES: SEQUENCE/ORDER
• When assembling the nuts and bolts on the back of the washing
machine, first start with the smallest bolts on the inside. Then continue
with the larger ones on the outside. After this step in completed, use
Screws A through D to put the back panel in place.
• Have you ever made macaroni and cheese? It’s simple! First, boil
some water and make some macaroni. Then, make your cheese
sauce. After the cheese sauce is ready, mix it with the macaroni. Bake
the entire thing in the oven. Finally, it’s time to eat!
PROBLEM-SOLUTION
This type of
structure sets up a
problem or
problems, explains
the solution, and
then discusses the
effects of the
solution.
EXAMPLES: PROBLEM-SOLUTION
• Thousands of people die each year in car accidents involving drugs
or alcohol. Lives could be saved if our town adopts a free public taxi
service. By providing such a service, we could prevent intoxicated
drivers from endangering themselves or others.
• A lot of students have been failing classes. These students wouldn’t be
failing classes if they studied more, asked questions, tried harder, and
came in for extra help. Even though a lot of students fail classes, they
have many options if they want to pass.
CAUSE AND EFFECT

This structure presents the

causal relationship
between and specific
event, idea, or concept
and the events, ideas, or
concept that follow.
EXAMPLES: CAUSE AND EFFECT
• Baby painted turtles spend all winter in their nests. They have special
chemicals in their blood that can keep their blood from freezing. As a
result, baby painted turtles can survive freezing temperatures!
• Did you know that the way you take care of your lawn can affect the
watershed? Many people use pesticides and herbicides to kill insects
and weeds. These chemicals can run off into streams and rivers,
harming plants and animals.
COMPARISON AND CONTRAST

This type of text

examines the similarities
and differences
between two or more
people, events,
concepts, ideas, etc.
EXAMPLES: COMPARISON/CONTRAST
• Linux and Windows are both operating systems. Computers use them
to run programs. Linux is totally free and open source, so users can
improve or otherwise modify the source code. Windows is
proprietary, so it costs money to use and users are prohibited from
altering the source code.
• There are two popular sports played at Ericson, basketball and
volleyball. Both take place inside of the gym at Ericson. Also, each
sport has two teams of people. In basketball, however, the ball can
be played off of the floor, and in volleyball, the ball cannot touch the
floor or it is out of play. Basketball and volleyball are popular sports at
Ericson.
