Rubrics For Machine Design

This document provides a rubric for evaluating machine design projects with 9 criteria scored out of 50 points total. The criteria include: background research (1 point), defining the problem statement and goals (2 points), conceptual design with sketches (3 points), detailed analysis and selection (4 points), detailed design with drawings (5 points), an overall project report (6 points), and prototyping and testing (6 points). Production is also listed but not scored (0 points). The rubric provides descriptions of the expected level of work for each criteria.

Identification of need
• Done for you by someone, boss or client
1)
• Typically, this statement will be brief and lacking in detail
e.g. We need a better service jack
0
2) Background research
• Research of a more ordinary sort, gathering background information on
the relevant physics, chemistry, or other aspects of the problem.
• Investigation to find out if this, or a similar problem, has been solved
5 1
before
3) Definition of the problem
• Problem statement
• Objective/Goal: Goal Statement should be concise, be general, and be
uncolored by any terms which predict a solution
• Constraint

e.g.
• Performance Specification: Define what the system must do 5 2
Design a system for lifting and moving loads of up to 5000 lb in a manufacturing
facility. The facility has an unobstructed span of 50 ft. The lifting system should
be inexpensive and satisfy all relevant safety standards.

4) Conceptual Design (Ideation and Invention)

• Various schemes must be proposed, investigated, and quantified in
terms of established metrics.
• Sketches
• Sketch the component or system under investigation, identifying known
5 3
and unknown parameters
5) Detailed Analysis and Selection
• Design Specifications
• Design considerations

• Material Selection
• Construct or devise abstract models of the system that will admit some
form of mathematical analysis. i.e. mathematical models.
• State all assumptions and decisions
• Use of appropriate formulas and equations
• Selection of the best design
6) Detailed Design
• Creation of a complete set of detail drawings or computer-aided design
(CAD) part files, for each and every part used in the design.
• Creation of a complete set of assembly drawings
• Assembly Procedure (Manual)
• Each detail drawing must specify all the dimensions necessary to make 15 5
that part.
• Each detail drawing must specify all the material specifications
necessary to make that part.

7) Overall project report
• Writing (grammars)
• Figures
• Spelling
• Formatting

• References
8) Prototyping and Testing
• Construction of a prototype physical model
• Prototypes can take many forms, from working scale models to full-
size, but simplified, representations of the concept.

9) Production
• Manufacture of a single final version of the design but more likely will
mean making thousands or even millions of your widget. 0
