Math in The Modern World

The document contains four word problems with explanations of the solutions. The first problem asks for the missing number in a pattern of 24, _, and 17+7. The explanation is that the missing number is 24, found by dividing and adding the surrounding numbers. The second problem asks for the missing number in a pattern of 24/8, 27/9, and 18/6. The explanation is that the missing number is 3, found by dividing the larger numbers by the smaller numbers. The third problem asks for the value of the last string in a pattern equation. The explanation shows setting up equations and solving to find the values of x, y, and z, then substituting them to find the last string's value is 21

Insert the missing numbers.

In each pattern, the

missing number has something to do with the
surrounding numbers in combination.
A. 24
 The missing number is 24. When we
divide 120 by 5 and 48 by 2, we get 24.
Also, 17 plus 7 gives us 24.

B. 3
 The missing number is 3 since when
we divide the larger numbers to the
smaller numbers across, we get 3 (e.g.
24/8, 27/9, and 18/6).

What is the value of the last string? Black,

white, and shaded circles have different
values.
21
 To find the value of the last string, we must
first make the first three strings into
mathematical equations by using x for black
balls, y for gray balls, and z for white balls.
 x + 4y =29
 2x + 2y + z = 22
 3x + 2y = 17
 2x + y + 2z = ?
 After, we can now get the respective values
of x, y, and z which are:
 X=1
 Y=7
 Z=6
 Now, that we already have the values of x, y
and z, we can now plug these into the fourth
equation, 2x + y + 2z, which is equal to 21.
What is the next number in this code
sequence?
217
Which of the circles above
should replace the question mark
 Below is how we arrived at 217 as the
below?
next number in the sequence.
C
 To get the pattern on the top,
we must first start at the
bottom. The patterns on the
fourth row were added to
each other to get the patterns
on the third row. Then, the
third-row patterns were
subtracted from each other to
get the patterns on the
second row. And finally, to
get the topmost pattern, the
two patterns on the second
row were added to each
What comes next in this sequence?
C
 The triangles and the shaded circles
are rotating counterclockwise.
Therefore, the next pattern in the
sequence is C.

Which of the following is the odd one

out?
D
 We arrived at D by pairing each
pattern with their opposites as seen
on the picture below.

 Pattern A is opposite to pattern E in

terms of the shaded and unshaded
regions (middle circle, left wing, and
right wing). This is also the case for
pattern C and G, and pattern B and F
which leaves pattern D as the odd
one out.
