About Dr Wang
• 2017 – Present: Assistant Professor at National University of
Singapore
• Research Areas: BIM, 3D laser scanning, computer vision,
artificial intelligence
• Teaching:
• PF1106: Introduction to Measurement
• PF1103: Digital Construction
• PF2109: Feasibility Study
• PM5113: Managing Projects Using BIM
4
Module Contents
• Introduction to Measurement
• What is measurement?
• What to measure?
• Dimension?
• Length?
• Width?
5
Module Contents
• In this module, “measurement” is to measure the quantities
for the trades or elements of a building project for the
preparation of cost estimates and bills of quantities (BQ).
• How many bricks and concrete are needed to construct the walls?
• How many windows and doors (of different types) are needed?
• …
Quantities
6
Module Contents
• Based on the quantities and unit rate , the builder (contractor)
generates bills of quantities (BQ) to estimate costs for project
tendering/bidding
• Also known as “quantity take-off” or “quantity surveying”
• The professional is known as quantity surveyor (QS)
BQ
7
Module Contents
• What is the reference for measurement?
• Design information
• 2D CAD drawing (CAD=computer-aided design, e.g. Autodesk
AutoCAD)
• 3D BIM models (BIM=building information model, e.g. Autodesk
Revit)
8
Module Contents
• What is the foundation of measurement?
• Construction technology
• How to construct the project decides the costs
• E.g. cast-in-situ and precast concrete
9
Learning Objectives
• Measurement
• Be able to design and draft a Bills of Quantities (BQ)
• Construction technology
• To understand the functional requirements and
construction technology for different building components
• To apply relevant code of practice
