Mensuration, what is this
about?
Mensuration
– is a topic in Geometry which is a branch of mathematics. It is the
measurement of geometric figures and their parameters
like length, volume, shape, surface area, lateral surface
area, etc.
› Geometric figures
– A geometric figure is any combination of points, lines, or planes.
– These are often classified as space figure, plane figure, lines, line
segments, rays, and points depending on the dimensions of the
figure.
Why is it important?
Mensuration in daily routine
› Man-made things that can be perceived through the
senses make use of geometry, thus use mensuration as
well.
› The clothes you wear, the mug you used to drink hot
choco/milk/tea/coffee in breakfast, the yummy pancit
canton you eat for snacks, the computer you use for online
class, etc.
Mensuration in construction industry
› Architecture
– Architects use mensuration to create the design of the building: its
shape, height, structure, basically the construction blueprint.
› Civil engineering
– Mensuration is used in the process of creating structural design
appropriate and safe for the architectural design of the project.
– Greatly used in estimating quantities, costs and time scales for
material and labor
› Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing
– Make use of mensuration to create MEP design appropriate and
safe for the project.
Other technical applications
› In surveying, mapping, and navigation.
› In software industries, it is used in graphics designing,
gaming, animations, etc.
What to expect?
Expect
› that the concepts of mensuration are explained and all
the important mensuration formulas provided, and
› that the properties of different geometric shapes and the
corresponding figures are given for a better understanding
of these concepts.
What are the target
learning outcomes?
At the end of the course, you will be able:
› to compute the perimeter and area of basic plane figures;
› to calculate the surface area and volume of basic solid
figures; and
› to utilize concepts of mensuration in actual application to
your specific field.
