Jelcome to the September issue of SAM.
‘This month |want to talk about the'tight
way to model: get toa lt of shows, in the
UK, Europe and Asia and see a lot of different
‘models finished in a dizzying variety of styles.
Regularly at shows, and in the modelling comers of
the intemet, | hear complaints about styles and
details. Things such as’panel lines are never visible at
a distance; artistic modelling is totally unrealistic; that
‘model is over weathered’ and so on. On the other
hand, people complain that others dismiss theirclean’
models as'boring! It saddens me that people ave so
negative and critical ofthe work of others. Often the
titicisms are based on the idea that there sa tight way’
and a‘wrong way to build models. Often this is based ona
perception of realism’and the idea that thisis the enly goal of
modelling
To start unpacking that, first we have to ask: is perfect
realism the goal of modelling? For many people itis. For others;
itis not. So, is itfair toimpose our idea of what modelling is on
others? fyou do, can you stand by it yourself? Can you really
claim your models totally accurate? If you went to great
lengths to get the scheme, colour and markings correct did
you also thin all trailing edges to scale thickness, did
you add all the plumbing to the engine and lines,
to the undercarriage?
Really; we each chose the level of accuracy and
artistic license that suits ourselves. And that is
exactly how it should be. Modelling isnot a team
sport. We lke to share it with each other at clubs
and shows, and with good friends. We like to read
about it on the internet and in magazines and
books. Ultimately though, its about one person,
sat ata bench, building a model. There is no wring
way to do it, unless you start to claim some sort of,
objective measure against something you impose
con yourself; such as colour accuracy.
So, in summary enjoy your hobby! Just don't
expect everyone else to enjoy it your way...
Personally | appreciate all approaches, and al
scales, and long may variety reign.
