Torsion Test Machine Lab Manual

This document provides operating instructions for a torsion testing machine. [1] The machine consists of a motor, gearbox, rotating chuck, non-rotating chuck, guide, pulley, and weights to apply tension to rod samples up to 10mm in diameter. [2] It measures the number of twists required to fracture samples between 1-500mm in length at rotation speeds of 30, 60, or 90 rpm. [3] The instructions describe how to select samples, set up tests, operate the machine safely, and record test results until the sample fractures and automatically stops the motor.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR
TORSION TESTING MACHINE
AS PER IS 1717/ IS 4454

INTRODUCTION
The number of twists required to fracture a Rod sample can be
determined rapidly with this machine. The standard machine
consists of a gear box coupled with a motor to give output of 30, 60
and 90 r.p.m. The machine is capable up to 10mm rod. A revolution
counter indicates the total number of twists and stop counting
when the sample fails. The distance between the rotating and non
rotating chuck can be between 1-500mm lengths. The sample is
held in between these to chucks the rod from 1mm to 10mm can be
tested with this machine. The machine is electrically operated
suitable to run on 1HP single phase or 1HP 3 phase.

FEATURES
The machine consists of a sturdy bed field on a frame duly covered,
a graduated scale fixed on it to indicate the length of the specimen
under test. An electric meter capacity (1 HP, 440 volts 3 Phase) is
fixed in the frame which is housed inside the gear box. On the gear
box. On the gear box output shaft check is mounted which serves
2
as the grip for the specimen under test. On the other side of the bed
another chuck is non-rotating i.e., one end of specimen under test
is held in chuck then posses through the guide and then ever to the
pulley supports the weights which are meant to straing them the
specimen. A speed selector handle is provided & by setting this to
the Desired rate of rotation of chuck can be achieved. Another no-
rotating chuck is supported on sturdy supports & a handle is
provided in its gear which helps in adjusting the length of the
specimen under test initially.

A mechanical counter is provided & indicated the number of terms

which the test specimen has undergone. During testing, the
specimen is kept covered by means of a wire mesh shield. A
reversible switch is mounted on one side which facilitates the
testing of the specimen in any desired direction.

One micro switch & relay circuit is also incorporated which

disconnects the motor as soon as the specimen under test fails. A
pointer is fixed on the rim of prorating chuck where segments are
marked. This is meant to indicate the initial position of the rotating
chuck before the commencement of the test.

OPERATIONS

3
Raise the wire mesh shield. Select a specimen for testing such that
its length is 100 times its diameter, it is below 5mm, in diameter
and in case its diameter is more than 5mm, its test length should
be fifty times. Straighten the specimen before testing using a
wooden hammer grip and of the specimen in chuck (rotating) and
pass the other end through chuck (non-rotating) and then through
the guide over the pulley and suspend weights as per Indian
Standards requirements. The weights suspended should not induce
a tensile stress in the specimen which is more than 2% of its
nominal tensile stress. They are primarily meant to straighten the
specimen. Tighten the non- rotating chuck after adjusting its
position so as to subject only the desired length of the specimen to
twisting.

Check that the mechanical counter is at zero. If not set it to zero by

rotating its knob. Note down the position of the pointer on the
segment dial. Lower the lower mesh shield. Connect the main cable
to supply line and switch on the motor with the help of reversible
switch. Now twisting of the specimen will start. As soon the
specimen will fail, the micro switch assembly will switch off the
motor. Note down the number of turns which the specimen has
undergone before breaking, from the digital counter and also make
a note of the position of the segmental pointer. In case the specimen

4
fails within a distance of 2 x d from the chucks the test should be
repeated on a fresh specimen.

PRECAUTIONS & MAINTENANCES:

1. Check the power requirements of the electric motor before
connecting it to the mains.
2. Before starting the test, the specimen should be straightened by
hammering it with a wooden hammer, if required.
3. Before starting the test make sure that the axis of the specimen
under test coincides with the axis of the chucks so that wire
remains straight which it is being twisted.
4. The twisting should be in the same direction during the test.
