–––PROJECT: TO DESIGN PACKAGING SOLUTION AT

PRODUCT LEVEL FOR FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND GROCERY

Project Objective: To provide insights about economic, suitable, and eco-friendly packaging
for different types of fruits, vegetables and grocery according to avoid spoilage and
maintaining the quality for long time.

PACKAGING PARAMETERS

1. Packaging should have adequate amount of ventilation, as it is necessary to maintain


the quality of the fruits and vegetables.
2. The packaging should consider the factor of moisture as reduction in moisture can
lead to damage and spoilage.
3. Every fruit and vegetable should be placed in containers having suitable temperature
according to their needs to avoid losing freshness of the fruits and vegetables.
4. Packaging material used for packaging should have adequate strength to handle the
weight of fruits and vegetables.
5. Packing material used should be eco-friendly. As it will reduce your carbon footprint,
disposal efforts. It can also be recycled for other purposes. Non-degradable
packaging may contain harmful toxins, which can react with fruits and vegetables
leading to spoilage.
6. Economical Packaging is essential, as it should not end up increasing the final cost of
the fruits and vegetables to the customer.
7. Packing involved in final delivery of fruits to the end customer should be aesthetic,
also providing information regarding the content, safety measures taken, quality
assurance and the details about the nutrition value.
8. The storage container should have the ability to adjust its height, as the fruits kept in
the lower compartment of the container should not get damaged due to heavy
storage in the upper compartment.
9. While transporting of fruits and vegetables to another city or stage, cold supply chain
should be taken into consideration. Cold storage containers can be used to storage
the fruits and vegetables. Temperature can be set according to the needs of the
particular fruits and vegetables.

CARDBOARD PACKAGING OF FRUITS

Due to rise in the health conscious segment in the society, cardboard packaging can be
helpful to gain the trust of the people since it is made of paper pulp which is obtained from
pine trees. Cardboard which is a type of paper packaging is a highly recyclable product. It
has the required amount of ventilation and helps to preserve the aroma, freshness and taste
of fruits compared to the plastic packaging.

Advantages of Cardboard Packaging

 Cardboard packaging has a good strength to weight ratio and therefore can provide
adequate amount of protection to the fruits and vegetables.
 Cardboard sheets can be folded and are light in weight therefore making it is easy for
storage in the inventory. Therefore reducing the inventory holding cost
 Cardboard boxes are easy to recycle and even if they are disposed by the customers
they do not cause large amount of damage to the environment.
 Energy consumed during production of cardboard is comparatively less compared to
the other methods of packaging.
 Cardboard packaging is economically viable and along with that the time taken to
convert the cardboard sheets into different container format is less.

Disadvantages of Cardboard Packaging

 Cardboard packaging may get damaged due to heavy pressures therefore cannot be
utilized for the heavy fruits like papaya and watermelons.
 Weather Proofing is where cardboard packaging lacks majorly in terms of protection
of the fruits and vegetables. Harsh weather condition like rainfall can be a threat for
cardboard packaging.
 Devices required for sealing the cardboxes like tape gun and water activated tape
dispenser may contribute to the cost.

PALLET BOXES AND SHIPPING CONTAINER


After the process of harvesting of fruits and vegetables it is vital to maintain the freshness.
Post-harvest losses in terms of quality and quantity can be reduced by using pallet boxes.
Pallet boxes comes in different sizes but most used format is 1200mm*1000mm.

Advantages of Pallet boxes

 Handling cost is low as the time required for loading, filling and unloading is less.
 The storage capacity is utilized to highly compare to smaller crates.
 Ensures the freshness of fruits and vegetables by having natural ventilation and non-
harmful material.
 Considerable amount of strength to sustain the weight of the fruits and vegetables
and avoid any kind of damage.
 Different sizes and shapes are available to match the product and customer needs.

Disadvantages of Pallet boxes

 The volume or space occupied by the pallet boxes after delivering the fruits is similar
to before delivery.
 Investment required is slight higher as forklift trucks, and other systems and handling
are required to empty the pallet boxes.
 Sometimes pallet boxs which are stored on top of each other can damage the fruits if
there is overload.

CLAMSHELL PACKAGING
Fresh fruits and vegetable demand is increasing day by day, Clamshell Packaging protects
the fruits the food and vegetable as well as is visible to the customer which increases their
confidence before making the purchase.

Advantages of Clamshell Packaging

 Clamshell packaging provides protection to fresh produce by increasing the shelf life
and provides an aesthetic look to the customers.
 Clamshell packaging provides high versatility and can be customized according to the
fruits and vegetables.
 Even though clamshell packaging is transparent it provides tremendous durability
and also protects the fruits and vegetables from the outer temperature changes.
 Clamshell Packaging is eye catching and also includes the information regarding the
packaging date, which helps to improve the trust of the customers.

Disadvantages of Clamshell Packaging

 Sometimes clamshell packaging is difficult for the customers to open


 They are made of plastics of polyester, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene which make it
difficult to recycle.
