Generally defined as the exchange of thoughts, ideas, concepts, or views among two or
more people, various contexts come into play.

Context

Different contexts can impact one's communication. Each communication type is

cultural, social, and psychological in nature. Communication may then be classified
according to communication mode, context as well as purpose, and style.

Types of Communication
Verbal - Non-verbal Communication
One cannot be separated from the other.

Visual Communication
Uses visuals to convey information and/or messages.

Ex. Signs, Symbols, imagery, maps, graphs, charts, diagrams, pictograms, and
photos, drawings, or illustrations, and even various forms of electronic
communication (emojis/emoticons)

Intrapersonal Communication
Intra- Latin prefix that means within or inside.

Talking to oneself. Self-talk, inner monologue, inner dialogue.

Psychologists call it self-verbalization or self-statement.

Interpersonal Communication
Inter-between, among, and together

An interactive exchange takes place as interpersonal communication takes place.

Communication is interpersonal if it is meant to establish or deepen one's


relationship with others. If the objective is to achieve something at the end of the
conversation, it becomes transactional.

Extended Communication
Involves the use of electronic media.

Television, radio, tele, audio, phone conferencing, video conferencing, skype calls,
and other technological means.

Allows the speaker to reach a wider group of listeners.

Organizational Communication
The focus is on the role that communication plays in organizational contexts.

There are two types of organizational structure:

1. Formal

2. Informal

The four approaches:

1. Downward communication

Intercultural Communication
Communication between or among people having different linguistic, religious,
ethnic, social, and professional backgrounds. Even gender difference affects
communication.
