The Inteligence of Matter: by Dumitru Constantin-Dulcan - Summary

This document attempts to answer fundamental questions about humanity's place in the universe from a comprehensive perspective drawing on science, religion, and the author's own clinical experience. The author argues that: 1) There is an intelligent, organizing principle underlying the universe that has directed evolution from simple to complex forms to process information up to humanity's level. 2) All living things have the ability to receive, process, and transmit information, demonstrating an inherent intelligence across the living world. 3) This universal intelligence is expressed on different levels from atoms to cells to humanity, and coordinates the functions of organisms to achieve goals, transcending any individual structure.

THE INTELIGENCE OF MATTER

By Dumitru Constantin-Dulcan
- Summary –

Are we alone in a hostile universe and are we free to fight in order to

survive by any means that can serve this purpose, or are we here due to a will, to
an intelligentforce which has created us with a precisefinality and wich we must
know so that we should fulfil it?

This seems to be the fundamental question the modern man asks

himself, the man whose existence on a planet named Earth seems to be
threatened by the lugubrious sound of the final gong.

Terrorized by permanent dangeros which threaten his life, affliked

with events that sweep off his quittnes, tortured by his impossibility of finding a
way out, he asks the science, the religion and the philosophy this question, but his
destiny still remains under the sign of unfulfilement, of dramas and of deth.
Where are the limits of science? And those of religion? Why, instead of
completing, science and religion, excluded eath other, with such evil
consequences for mankind, when nobody can ever know the absolute truth? Is
there any way out of the deadlock? What do we we actually know about
ourselves and which is, consequently, the way to be followed?

This book is an attempt to supply answers to man’s fundamental

questions in a comprehensive approach covering all the available sources of
knowledge – from science to religion, and from loboratory experiments to the
autor’s own clinical experience in the field of neuropsychiatry.

There is a principle of universal coherence. The coherent whole of the

Universe is formed through evolution from simple to complex, from inorganic to
organic, from non-living to living, in accordance with a general plan. It is thanks to
this general plan that the entire world, its living part included, has common
features of organization and operation.

Underlying the Universe is an organizing, coordinating Mind, found

in the primordial “Logos” or information.

Evolution can only be explained by starting from change. Without

an ordering cause there can only be disorder. The term “evolution” is not self-
explannatory since in forms regarded as more evolved than others, and
phylogenetically preceding them, there exist organs with lower degree of
performance. For example, while man is considered to be more evolved than the
dog, he lacks the high-performance smell of the latter, or the visual keenness of
the eagle. That is why the goal of evolution is not, apparently, the functionality of
the parts but the finality of the whole. Evolution seems to have had no other
purpose than the perfecting of the forms of processing information up to the
point where it can detect its own source and finality. Life is order in an entropic
Universe and is based on informational connections.

Information is an essential requisite for life. All living entities, wheter

endowed with nervous structures or not, and no matter how advanced in
evolution, have the ability to receive and process information in order to work out
behaviours appropriate to their environment. The nervous system is a structure
needed in information processing but the plans do not have it.

There are several dimensions to the organization of the living world:

the informational-energetic , or primary, the biochemical and the molecular, or
the morphological. Any action, thought or physiological change in living matter is
bound to intersect these three aspects.

The primary, informational-energetic dimension or the biofield is, in

our view the matrix organizing and operating every living sydtem. The genetic
code could be secondary, as a concrete functioning expression of the primary
dimension.

There is an energetic model of the individual, the species, and the

entire living world.
From the ability of living systems to receive, process and emit
information there follows an ability to establish informational relationships with
other systems or, in one word, to communicate.

Communication is a basic attribute of the living world. From the

simplest forms to the most advanced, from the protozoar to man, the entire living
world communicates. We believe that the very essence of whatever lives is its
ability to communicate.

The essence of lifelies in its intelligence, as expressed by the ability to

discern and process information.

Intelligence, in the sense ascribed to the whole living world, lies in its
ability to solve its own problems.

In the author’s opinion, there is one intelligence pervading all the

visible and invisible structures of the Univers. It is the Mind that organized and
orders the world down to the energy quanta. This Mind present in the Univers has
the following levels of representation: crystallized intelligence at the atom level,
expressed by valency; non-verbalized basal intelligence, found in all living cells, in
plants and animals; verbalized human intelligence; cosmic intelligence - the basis
for the laws of universal organization. It is the intelligence organizing the
Universe, or what the author designates by the Inteligence of matter .

The intelligence has a twofold characteristic: it is intrinsic to matter,

and expressed by biochemical reactions, the genetic code etc.; it is also extrinsic,
acting at the individual world interface. The extrinsic intelligence coordinates the
functions of two different organisms in achieving a simple purpose. It is an
intelligence transcending the structures and functions of any organism.

The site of the extrinsic intelligence could be at the level of the

universal informational field, wherw all the morphogenetic models of the
objective world are likely to be deposited. In a modern approach, these could be
regarded as representing what Plato to as ideas and C.G. Jung as archetypes.
The universal, or fundamental field is the source of information and
the backstage coordinator of the whole world. This “invisible brain” is
represented down to the individual level. The informational circuit may be
described as follows: the fundamental field – the living world – the fundamental
field.

At the level of the non-speaking living world, intelligence is

expressed by the instincts. These instincts appear to be a kind of adaptative, self-
preservating storehouses of intelligence. Every living beind has that level of
intelligence which enables it to achieve its purpose.

At the human level, the fundamental field is expressed by the

structures of the subconscious. Where all the programmes and functional
patterns required by the events occurring in the organism are stored.

A number of arguments, some from the author’s own experience,

are adduced in favour of the phenomenon of prediction. If there is such a thing as
prediction when the entire world outlook, that science has cultivated for more
than a century, will have to be revised. The woeld seems to be predetermined
and, at the same time, to be able to constantly control and adjust to new
circumstances what has been predetermined. That is the only way we can explain
why the world is evolutive rather than static, as it should be if rigidly
predeterminated.

Telepathic laboratory tests, some mounted by the author himself

under strict scientific control, lead to a number of ontological consequences.

Information seems to be transferable from one brain to other

through a channel not yet known.

The exclusively mental transmission of a message at a distance

between two brains presuppose a material support, an energy fieldmodulated
into information-carrying signals. The immediate logical consequence is the idea
that, so viewed, thoughts represent a material force expressed by the energy
coming from the brain and modulated into information-carrying signals. It
followed that a thought will have a twofold action on another: semantic through
its ideation content and energetic through the field emission it presupposes as a
substratum. More consequences arise in this regard in the space of cognition. The
interhuman relations, characterized by compatibility and incompatibility, by
sympathy and antipathy, as well as psychotherapy and particularly suggestion and
certain empirical therapeutic techniques appear to be motivated by a real
material substratum. One must also admit that there exists a wordless thinking,
restricted to images, which has long been a subject of controvery. It is a field
carrying mental information that precedes the word. This prelanguage is, in the
aothor’s view, the universal language of life, not mediated by words and
accessible to all beings, from isolated live cells to plants, protozoars and man.

There is an intermediate state of consciousness, refferend to as

“transpersonal” in modern psychology, which reveals the existence of a different
dimension of reality, so far mentioned only in esoteric knowledge and religion.
The existence is thus proved of three sources of knowledge: the empiric, the
scientific and the esoteric. Modern physis has supplied arguments for the
existence of an invisible dimension of reality, lying beyond the possibility of
discernment through formal logic, subject to mathematical rigour rather than to
common reason. It is the territory where prescientific thoughts came into being,
in the in the form of mythology, esotericism, the religions, customs and traditions
found in the life of all people. That is why knowing reality calls for an integrative
approach that will take accont of all the existing sources and distinguish their
common elements, only apparently seen as different, depending on the time and
place where they have emerged.

In virtue of the present possibilities of approach, there are questions

that cannot - such as the one concerning the origin of the Universe and life.

According to the source that we ascribe to the Universe and life, we

distinguish between a realm of the Sacred and one of the Profane. The religions
are codifications at the level of the Sacred. They fill the void from zero time to
that of the Big Bang imagined by science, providing a symbol-covered answer to
the troubling questions that man has always asked himself. The purpose of life’s
evolution seems to be precisely that of reaching a stage where man can grasp the
cause and essence of his own determination. The way to this goal is penetrations
intodepths of his inner universe, whch has been neglected by modern civilization,
itself a dominant reflex of man’s outer universe. It is in these depths that we find
our essential being, which is consubstantial with the Universe-ordering intelligent
source. The tool for perfecting man, for optimizing him at the level of the creative
potentialities, with wich he is endowed, is found in the self-imposed control of
thoughts. Through it we willingly or not become involved in the physis of the
Universe, according as we think positively or negatively. That is why the self-
imposed control of thought is the only means of fulfilling and optimizing our
being, of regaining our lost Self in a world that has no other chance of quietude.
