Helpful Hints
• Read each book ahead of time, if possible.
• The script will enable you to teach the lesson even if
you have not had time to preview the book.
• Use voices of characters.
• Alter vocal intensity.
• Use gestures to act out difficult vocabulary or to
remember the sequence.
• Have students act out or show emotions that a
character is displaying.
• Point to characters who are talking if the dialog is hard
to follow.

Helpful Hints
• Students face the person who is talking.
• Students ask each other to respond to his/her
thought.
• Be a facilitator-don’t dominate.
• Goal is for students to infer, question each other,
ask for clarification, and comment on each
other’s thoughts.
• Allow time to ponder ideas.
• Pause so that students can think about the text.

Before Reading
• Show the cover and say, “This story is called, “The
Grouchy Ladybug.”
• “The name of the person who wrote the words is
Eric Carle.”
• “This person is called an author.”
• Slowly flip through the pages.
• Ask, "What is going on here?" "Who is this?"
"Why does the character look so excited?"
"Where did the character just come from?"
"How do you think the story is going to end?"

• “What do you think the story will be about?”
• “It’s important to understand what the word
grouchy means. Turn to a partner and tell
them what you think the word grouchy
means.”
• Read the short forward about aphids and
ladybugs. Discuss.

F Elicitation Tips
• Airy bunny sound, or long sound
• Compare it to /p/ (puffy sound or pop sound)
• Say: “Rest your upper teeth on your lower lip
and push out air.”
• Draw hand down arm while holding /f/ to give
visual cue of production length.
• Have student look in mirror and make the /f/
and /p/ sound. Teach the difference.

Elicitation Tips F (Prevocalic Voicing)
• Airy bunny sound
• Compare with /v/- vacuum sound or buzzy
sound
• Have the student touch your throat and their
throat while producing the /v/ and /f/ sound.
• Motor off for /f/ sound, feel the buzz for /v/?
• Minimal Pairs: face-vase, fan-van, fine-vine,
fail-veil
