Everyone has the right to vote. Every country of the world has their own election process, of how
they will choose their own president, and political dynasty is not an issue to anyone who is in the
government already. In the United States, voter suppression has a long and tumultuous history,
and it has reappeared with a vengeance in the last two decades. United States have erected
barriers to voting in the last two decades, enacting tough voter ID laws, reducing voting periods,
restricting registration, and cleansing voter lists. These attempts, which gained traction after the
Supreme Court undermined the Voting Rights Act in 2013, have blocked a considerable number
of eligible voters from casting ballots, affecting all Americans, but disproportionately affecting
ethnic minorities, the poor, and young and aged voters.
In addition, to determine if the Philippines is suffering from suppression of the right to vote, let’s
identify the signs of oppression. You will be better equipped to exercise your rights if you
comprehend oppressive regimes, the signs are “Making voter registration more difficult”, “Voter
rolls are being purged”, “Criminal justice populations are becoming disenfranchised”, “The
number of polling stations is being reduced”, “Early voting restrictions”, “Enforcing strict voter
identification standards”, and “Alternatives to physical voting and registration are being
restricted”. In this manner, voter suppression is a technique for influencing election results by
discouraging or prohibiting certain groups of people from voting. If many voters are frightened
or disenfranchised, voting suppression can be successful.
In my own perspective, political dynasty is not a form of voting rights suppression because by
the definition itself, voting rights suppression simple means preventing someone to vote with his
own free-will. Political dynasty talks about a specific bloodline that has been in the government
for a long period of time, wherein fact, here in the Philippines, political dynasty is not a big deal
anymore because right from the start, same bloodline is in the government and those people who
are unknown to anyone is just a nuisance. Political dynasty is a rampant issue here in our
country simply because right now, the intention is so vividly noticeable that everyone can truly
identify their purpose of why they are still on the government that despite of their own mess and
controversies, people are still into them or they are still a die-hard fan, which seemingly
irrational. Voting suppression happens also by casting out our votes as individually through
buying our votes which technically happens during elections. In that manner, ineffable
circumstances can affect your situation where you badly needed a penny over your practice to
vote rightfully.
Moreover, “the State shall provide equitable access to chances for public service and prevent
political dynasties as defined by law,” says the 1987 constitution. Section 26 of Article II, headed
"Declaration of Principles and State Policies," is what we're talking about. Despite this, the
legislation necessary by this state policy has not been developed until today, 25 years later.
Because there is no anti- dynasty statute, the impact of the 1987 Constitution's term limitations to
equalize access to political office has been neutralized: elected politicians are simply replaced by
members of their immediate family. Power is passed down through the generations. According to
political dynasties, it is up to the voters to vote them in or out. They are correct in this, since they
will not shrink, limit, or ban themselves.
Hence, Political dynasties' members provide a variety of explanations for their survival.
However, the evidence is in the pudding: these locations are associated with higher poverty and
poorer human development indexes. In these circumstances, we may be more confident that a
voter's support for a dynastic candidate over another from the same party is due to a dynastic
preference. Political dynasty might affect the voting right of everyone because anyone can vote
the same part or person and can do such things that can malpractice the rightful voting system
that leads to voting rights suppression.
