Autodesk Nastran 2022 Nonlinear Analysis Handbook 33

The Autodesk Nastran 2022 Nonlinear Analysis Handbook discusses updates to the program's contact modeling capabilities. It describes two contact modeling approaches - dynamic, which uses a proximity-based stiffness that automatically increases depending on penetration, and static, which uses displacement-based stiffness where maximum penetration is calculated automatically. The main update is that the penalty stiffness for dynamic contact no longer needs manual adjustment, improving convergence without penetration.

x DYNAMIC - Proximity based stiffness using a softer initial penalty stiffness, SFACT, which is
automatically increased from 0.01 to 1.0 depending on penetration, convergence, and divergence.
x STATIC - Displacement based stiffness where the maximum penetration (TMAX) is calculated
automatically based on contact area and SLINEMAXDISPTOL (default = 1E-4).

The main advantage to the new parameter is that SFACT no longer has to be manually adjusted to find a
good compromise between convergence and contact penetration. SLINESLIDETYPE=DYNAMIC is best
for models that undergo sliding contact. SLINESLIDETYPE=STATIC is best for models with little sliding
between contact.
