HOW TO CREATE A TIMELINE USING DIPITY

1. Create an account by joining Dipity at www.dipity.com

2. Along the top of the page are four options – Home, Create a
Timeline, Hot Topics and Dipity Premium  Click “Create a
Timeline”
3. Your next page will be the “Create a Timeline” page.
a. Write your topic name.
b. Write a brief description of what the topic is about.
c. Pick your time zone.
d. You have the option of uploading a picture that describes the timeline (this can
tend to take awhile) or you can paste an image URL.
i. If you are pasting an image URL from your news site – Using your
computer mouse, right click the image and click on “Copy image location.”
At this point, a URL will be made. I would suggest opening another window
or tab to make sure the correct URL is created.

4. When creating your timeline, I would suggest keeping the

permissions at “Anyone,” unless you know additional editing
from the page is not needed before you upload it to the site. You
also need the permissions to be set at “Anyone” when preparing
the embed code at the end of the process.
5. Click “Continue to add events”
6. The first page you come to is the “Add events to (insert topic
name here). The first tab is an “Existing Events” tab, where you
will see the “Dipity Timeline Created” is already inserted. I
always remove that slide, but that is at your discretion.
7. Click “Add Event”
8. Fill in all the designated blanks.
a. You can use your own title or copy the headline from the story you are linking.
b. You could write your own description or copy and paste the lead (lede) from the
story. you are linking – keeping in mind to change the date format and tense usage.
c. Same concept as before for adding the photo.
d. You can find the video link in the back end of Syndicaster, however, it seems
buggy with adding video.

9. Click “Add event” box under the video URL option.

10. Repeat this process until you have added all the events you
would like
11. Click “Continue” on the main page
12. Add your tags, choice defaults and click “Save and view
timeline”
13. The next page is the timeline view of what you just created.
You have the option of viewing the timeline as an actual timeline,
a flip book, list or a map. You can edit the entries by clicking the
item.
a. Timeline: The timeline would be ideal if you have dates close together or a
sequence of events that don’t have large gaps in between.
b. Flipbook: It looks nice when you have different pictures to attach with each of
your links and encourages user engagement because you are actually flipping
through the content.
c. List: The list is nice because unlike the other options, you have the viewable link
to the story – this could be helpful when replacing the “related stories” link within
a story
d. Map: I envision crime maps or foreclosure maps. This is good when you have
widespread locations but acts the same as Google maps might.
14. To embed the timeline (once final edits are completed) click
“Embed” in the right corner above the timeline box. Note: Your
timeline permissions must be set to “Anyone” can view it when
embedding – See step 4.
15. Adjust the dimensions to what your publication uses, pick a
default view and color scheme and copy and paste the embed
code.
16. Voila!

Editor’s notes:
 The more pictures you have, the better. Not only do the pictures pop up in the timeline
but it makes the timeline prettier and makes the flipbook look awesome.
 There are no stats options on the Dipity site, as far as I can tell, so you have to gauge
metrics your own ways. Use surveys, place as separate Web stories and so on.
 Let me know what you think of my directions!
 On the “Add events to (insert topic name here)” page (Step 6) I have not played with the
other options, but some include a timeline of Tweets, adding a timeline within the
timeline, videos, blogs, music and so on. If you play with these options, let me know what
you come up with!
