I) Answer the given questions.

1) In the third sentence, the author says, “It was exceedingly dull’.
What does the author want the reader to infer from that
sentence?

The author wants the reader to infer that Roger’s life was very
boring. OR
The author wants the reader to infer that Roger led a boring life.

2) The 17th and 18th lines say that the leaves were nearly as big as
the elf was…… What does it tell you about the size of the elf?

It tells us that the elf was very tiny or small. OR It tells us that the elf
only tinier than the leaf. OR
It tells us that the elf was no bigger than a leaf.

3) Pick out one sentence each from the story that tells you that:
a) Roger was scared at first
Any one- With a fright, he looked down……
Had his brain managed to create this hallucination?

b) Roger was at ease later


He scooped up the elf in his hand OR
“Where are you going?” he asked in alaram….

4) ‘..the little elf began to stalk off through the leaves’. Identify the type of the
words marked in bold. What does it tell you about the elf’s feeling?

5) Read the phrase, “He looked around oddly amused…” What is


the best word to replace ‘oddly”?

6) In the first line, Roger’s feeling is described as ‘bored’. Write


examples from the extract that tell you Roger felt his life was
boring.
Any one- Instead he had to sweep the porch, clean the windows and
chop firewood.
He wished for adventure in his dull life.
Nothing seemed to stir him or get his heart moving.

7) Change the following words to its present tense form.
