Grammar/语法

If I were you...

In today's lesson, the customer gives the salesperson some advice: "If I were you, I would change that policy."
This is a perfect example of what we call the “subjunctive voice” in English. There are two things to keep in
mind here:

今天的课程中,这位顾客给了店员一些建议:“If I were you, I would change that policy (我要是你,肯定会改改这

条规定)”。这个例句向我们很好地展示了英语里的虚拟语气。我们需要记住两个有关它的要点:

One, the subjunctive voice always points to an unreal situation. The customer may be giving the salesperson
advice, but because she will never be him, her words “if I were you” point to something unreal.

第一点,虚拟语气描述的并非真实情况。这个例句中的顾客确实是在给店员提意见,但因为这位顾客永远不可能变成店

员,她所说的“if I were you (我要是你)”自然也并非真实情况了。

Secondly, the subjunctive voice uses the past tense in the if clause, and modal verbs like "would" or "could" in
the second clause. When you're giving advice however, it's almost always "If I were you, I would…" or "If I
were you, I wouldn't…"

第二点,使用虚拟语气时,我们要对“if”引导的从句使用过去时,同时在主句中添加情态动词,比方说“would (将,
会)”和“could (能,可以)”。人们常用“If I were you, I would… (我要是你,我会…)”和“If I were you, I
wouldn't… (我要是你,我就不会…)”两个句式来提建议。

Let's look at a few more examples:

我们再来看几个例句吧:

1. If I were you, I wouldn't go to that party alone.

我要是你,肯定不会自己去那个派对。

2. If I were you, I'd make sure to bring extra money.

我要是你,肯定会多带些钱的。

3. If I were you, I would be a bit more careful.

我要是你,就会更小心点儿。
