Experiment No. 2 Resistor Color Code: Apparatus

This document describes an experiment to determine resistor values using color codes and measurement with a digital multimeter (DMM). It explains that resistors have color bands that represent numbers and multipliers to indicate resistance value. The experiment involves looking up nominal resistance values from color codes, calculating expected resistance ranges, measuring resistors with a DMM, calculating percent errors, and determining which measurements are within tolerance. The results are displayed in a table showing most resistors were within the typical 5% tolerance range.

Resistor Color Code

Apparatus:
1. Set of wires.
2. Carbon Resistors.
3. Digital A.V.O. meter

Theory
There are two ways to find the resistance value of a resistor. The color bands on the
body of the resistor tell how much resistance it has., there are 5-band resistors and 4-band
resistors. Form both 5- and 4-band resistors, the last band indicates tolerance .Consult with the
“Resistor Tolerance for finding the tolerance value.

4 bands resistance
The number of bands is important because the decoding changes based upon the number of color
bands. There are three common types: 4 band, 5 band, and 6 band resistors. For the 4 band
resistor:

Band 1 – First significant digit.

Band 2 – Second significant digit
Band 3 – Multiplier
Band 4 – Tolerance

Another way to tell the resistance value of a resistor is to actually measure it with the ohmmeter.
The explanation of how to measure the resistance is given in the later tip. Where:-

Rmax = R+(R * T )
Rmin = R-(R * T )

Procedure
1. Determine the upper and lower limits of each resistor in record the limit values.
2. Using the DMM, measure the resistance of one resistor of each value. Compare the measured
value to the nominal value and calculate the percent error and record the percent error on Table
1. Note whether it is within the 5% tolerance range.
3. Using at least one other meter, measure the resistor again and compare this reading to the
DMM. Calculate the percent error and record it on Table 1.
4. Indicate which resistor measurements are in tolerance and which, if any, are not. Show your
calculations neatly on a separate piece of paper.
Note: For the DMM measurement,

Conclusion
• I concluded from above experiment that we can find resistance value by color code
method easily.
• For accurate measurement of resistance we have to use Digital Multimeter (DMM).
