Class:12 Physics Assignment 3 Topic: Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation

This physics assignment document contains 15 questions related to the photoelectric effect and dual nature of matter and radiation. The questions assess understanding of concepts such as de Broglie wavelength, kinetic energy, momentum, work function, stopping potential, and their relationships to factors like particle type, accelerating potential, frequency and wavelength of radiation. Students are asked to analyze graphs, identify relationships, calculate values, and justify answers.

Topic: Dual nature of matter and radiation

1 Show graphically the variation of de-Broglie wavelength λ with the potential V through
which an electron is accelerated from rest.
2 A proton and an alpha particle are accelerated through the same potential. Which one of the
two has
(i) greater value of de- Broglie wavwlength associated with it
(ii) less kinetic energy.
Give reasons to justify your answer.
3 Find the ratio of the de-Broglie wavelength, associated with protons, accelerated through a
potential of 128 V and alpha particles, accelerated through a potential of 64 V.
4 Calculate the momentum of the electron accelerated through a potential difference of 56 V?
5 An electron microscope uses electrons accelerated by a voltage of 50 kV. Determine the de-
Broglie wavelength associated with the electrons. Taking other factors, such as numerical
aperture, etc., to be same, how does the resolving power of an electron microscope compare
with that of an optical microscope which uses yellow light?
6 The two lines marked A and B in the given figure, show a plot of de-Broglie wavelength λ
versus 1/√V, where V is the accelerating potential for two nuclei 1H2 and 1H3 .
(i) What does the slope of the lines represent?
(ii) Identfy, which of the lines correspond to these nuclei.

λ A

1/√V

7 The given graph shows the variation of photoelectric current I versus applied voltage V for
two different photosensitive materials and for two different intensities of the incident
radiations. Identify the pair of curves that corresponds to different materials but same
intensity of incident radiation.

8 The graph shows the variation of stopping potential with frequency of incident radiation for
two photosensitive metals A and B.Which one of the two has higher val;ue of workfunction?
Justify your answer.
9 Ultraviolet radiations of different frequencies n1 and n2 are incident on two photosensitive
materials having work functions w1 and w2 ( w1 > w2) respectively. The kinetic energy of the
emitted electron is same in both the cases. Which one of the two radiations will be of higher
frequency?

10 Two monochromatic radiations, blue and violet, of the same intensity, are incident on a
photosensitive surface and cause photoelectric emission. Would
(i) the number of electrons emitted per second and
(ii) the maximum kinetic energy of the electrons, be equal in the two cases? Justify your
answer.

11 In the explanation of photoelectric effect, we assume one photon of frequency n collides with
an electron and transfers its energy. This leads to the equation for the maximum energy Emax of
the electron as, Emax = hn – f 0
where f0 is the work function of the metal. If an electron absorbs two photons (each of
frequency n ) what will be the maximum energy for the emitted electron?

12 The work function for a certain metal is 4.2 eV. Will this metal give photoelectric emission
for incident radiation of wavelength 330nm?

13 Draw a graph to show the variation of stopping potential with frequency of radiation incident
on a metal plate. How can the value of Planck's constant be determined from this graph.
14 There are two sources of light, each emitting with a power of 100W. One emitts X-rays of
wavelength1nm and the other visible light at 500nm. Find the ratio of number of photons of
X-rays to the photons of visible light of the given wavelength?
15 Consider a metal exposed to light of wavelength 600nm. The maximum energy of the
electron doubles when light of wavelength 400nm is used. Find the work function in eV.
