CONDITIONALS

A) Write 5 examples of the Zero Conditional, using “when” and “if”:

 If you heat ice, it melts.


 When it rains, the grass gets wet.
 If he studies hard, he’ll do well in the exam.
 When I talk to my dad, I feel homesick.
 If I run, I get tired.

B) Choose the correct item and underline it (First Conditional ):

1. If I move / I’ll move to Boston, I live / I’ll live on Main Street.


2. If you call / you’ll call your mother, she’ll be very happy.
3. If the mechanic fixes our car on time, we drive / we’ll drive to Center Ville.
4. If it rains / it’ll rain today, we won’t go to the park.
5. If I’m not in a hurry tonight, I write / I’ll write to her.
6. If she isn’t / won’t be sick, she’ll go to school.
7. If they’re / they’ll be tired tomorrow, they don’t go / won’t go to work.
8. If John doesn’t buy a new car, he buys / he’ll buy a motorcycle.

C) Unscramble the sentences (First Conditional):

D) Complete the sentences with any vocabulary you wish (First Conditional):
1. If the weather is bad tomorrow, we'll not go on a picnic.
2. If we hitchhike to work,  we can get there earlier.
3. If I do not sleep well tonight, I might wake up late.
4. If you do not fix the broken window, you should call someone who does.
5. If he does not cut his hair, we will go to make braids.
6. If If they graduate , they’ll go to a restaurant tonight.
7. If she cleans her room, his mother will be happy.
8. If he doesn't wash the dishes, his mother will be sad.
9. If he doesn't have the papers, her boss will fire him.
10. If he doesn't get out, their friends will be angry.
11. If I study hard, I will past the test
12. If it’s sunny at the weekend, I will go to the beach with my family.
13. If I become rich, . I will donate the money to a charity.
14. If I go to London, I will visit the Big Ben.

E) Complete the sentences with these phrases (Second Conditional):

* If Peter ate less

* If I lost all my money * your English would improve * I’m sure she’d tell me * If I
were a famous model
* my English teacher would be surprised

Peter ate less, he wouldn’t be so fat. 6. If my little sister did something wrong, 6  I´m
sure she´d tell me 7  If I were a famous model, people would see my photo
everywhere.

F) Complete the sentences. Use the correct form of the verbs in brackets (Second
Conditional):

Example: I’m not ill, but if I ..... were ..... ill, I wouldn’t go ....... to school. (be / go)

1. The weather report says there will be snow tomorrow. If it. snows Iwill stay at
home. (snow / stay)

2. Do you need some money? Let me look in my pockets. If I . have some, I will
lend you some. (have / lend)

3. No, sorry. I haven’t got any money with me. But you know I will give it to you
if I have any. (give / have)

4. I’m sure of it. You will pass the test next week if you study hard. (pass / study)
5. Would you like to go to the cinema? If you want to go, I will come with you.

G) What would you do in each situation? Write UNREAL PRESENT situations


(Second Conditional):

* call an ambulance * complain to the manager * run away * try to catch it * ring the
police
* walk to the nearest garage to get some

1. You find a fly in your soup. If I found a fly in my soup, I would complain to
the manager.
2. You see a burglar breaking into your house.

3. You see a mouse in your kitchen.

H) Read these situations. Say how you would feel (Second Conditional): Example:
your boy / girlfriend leaves you

If my girlfriend left me I would feel miserable.

1. you have nothing to do

If I had nothing to do, I would go for a walk

2. you are lost in a foreign country

If I was lost abroad, I would locate a police station and tell them what happened.

3. your pet dies if my pet died

I would cry a lot and lose my appetite for a few days

4. you see an enormous spider in the bathroom

if i see a huge spider in the bathroom i would scream a lot and run away
5. you split your jeans in the street

If the jeans were ripped on the street, I would come home to change them or buy
new ones

6. someone steals your coat

If someone steals my coat, I would chase them to a stop

7. you fail an important test

If I failed an important test, I would fall into depression but then I would
recover and keep trying

8. you win some money in a competition

if i won money in a competition i would be happy and see if i need it for


something important or i would save it

Write 10 instructions you can tell a new coworker in your company, using the
Conditionals 0,1 and 2

 If you do not do the payroll, you will have problems with the employees

 if you are late, it is noted in a book

 If you have any permission, you will not be denied leaving the company

 if you steal something, you will be fired


 if you do your job well, it would be rewarded

 If lunch time is until 12:30, and it is past the hour, it will be discounted

 If you have a meeting with the department of bosses, you should not be

late

 if you finish early, ask your boss if you can leave early

 If you take a day off without permission, you will be fired


 If you can be courteous to other people, they will respect you.
