Chapter-1: Introduction: 1.1 Introduction To Final Year Project

This document provides an introduction and overview of a final year civil engineering student project focused on designing and managing an 8-story residential building. The objectives are to ensure the structural safety and serviceability of the building against various loads through detailed analysis and design using software like Etabs and Safe. The project also includes developing cost estimates, bar bending schedules, and bills of quantities to manage the construction costs. The building has a rectangular shape with a commercial ground floor and residential floors above, supported by a reinforced concrete structural system designed to safely support the building loads.

CHAPTER-1: INTRODUCTION

Civil engineering, the profession of designing and executing structural works that serve the
general public, such as buildings, dams, bridges, aqueducts, canals, highways, power plants,
sewerage systems, and other infrastructure. However in this project we will be focusing on the
design and management of a multi-story building.

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO FINAL YEAR PROJECT :

Our final year project is focused on the design and management of a G +8storey building. The
superstructure of the building is divided into two segments, these segments serve two different
functions, The ground floor consists of shops which serve commercial purpose while 1 st to 8th
floor segment of the building serve residential purpose.
The designing of the structure was done using two software, Etabs was used for superstructure
while substructure was designed using Safe. The management phase includes cost estimation
using BBS and BOQ sheets was done using Excel.

1.2 AIM:
Our main aim to complete a Multi-story building is to ensure that the structure is safe against all
possible loading conditions and to full fill the function for which they have built. Safety
requirements must be met so that the structure is able to serve its purpose with the maintain cost.
Detailed planning of the structure usually comes from several studies made by town planners,
investors, users, architects and other engineers. On that, a structural engineer has the main
influence on the overall structural design and an architect is involved in aesthetic details. For the
design of the structure, the dead load, live loads, seismic and wind load are considered. The
analysis and design for the structure done by using a software such as Etabs and Safe.
The main objectives of our project are as follows:
 To ensure sufficient serviceability of the structure.
 Design of a superstructure that can withstand all the applied loads acting on it, including
the lateral loads such as wind and seismic loads.
 Design of foundation.
 Bar Bending schedule.
 Bill of Quantities.
 Cost estimation.
