Experiment: Activity I. Defining Science
Experiment: Activity I. Defining Science
SECTION: BEED – 2C
Do you remember how your previous teachers, readings, and classes define science? Create a word
cloud below to illustrate/show these definitions or keywords. Be guided by the sample word cloud on
knowledge below. You should create your OWN word cloud.
Example:
"Science is the intellectual
and practical activity
encompassing the
systematic study of the
structure and behavior of
the physical and natural
world through observation
and EXPERIMENT."
enterprise

Science means several things to various individuals and institutions. You can see the various
facets of science in the first column below. On the opposite column, write your insights and
reflection about each of the facets of science.
1. Science as broad body of knowledge We all know that science refers to a systematic and
organized body of knowledge in any area of inquiry that
is acquired using “the scientific method”. Science consists
of a body of knowledge and the process by which that
knowledge is developed. The core of the process of
science is generating testable explanations, and the methods
and approaches to generating knowledge are shared
publicly so that they can be evaluated by the community of
scientists.
2. Science as a set of skills The science process skills help students to understand
phenomena, answer questions, develop theories and
discover information. This model emphasizes the
integration of learning about process and content in
effective instruction. There are many opportunities for
learners to engage with conceptual material, while
being deeply involved in laboratory work. As my
experienced there’s a lot of things that science I don’t
know about but for the help of my instructor a lot of
things I discover of my skills when it comes to this
subject. Science is a set of skills because they are
essential in developing ideas and they increase
academic achievement in science learning.
3. Science as intellectual activity Science is an intellectual activity which arises from
personal experiences. It takes places in the mind of
man. Science is simply a way of using human
intelligence for getting a better understanding of
nature’s law. Science is then, closely related to the
environment. For me, science as intellectual activity
which is a meaningful functioning of mind. This is the
way science is expected to reach to its conclusions
about the world.
4. Science as a social activity Science influences society through its knowledge and
world view. Scientific knowledge and the procedures
used by scientists influence the way many individuals
in society think about themselves, others, and the
environment. Therefore, science as a social activity it
has interaction that brings members of a community
together.
5. Science as a problem solving Science talk also about experiment which is a problem
that must be solved. So, we should form a hypothesis
it is a possible solution to the problem formed after
gathering information about the problem. Science as a
problem solving that need to have investigation,
assessment to cope up a science result.
6. Science as a career Science as a career it is an ever-expanding field with a
network of possibilities for future growth and
development. As we can see nowadays if you have
enough knowledge to experiment and discover a new
thing that literally will help the people you have the
chance to be a billionaire any moment. Therefore,
science as career it will align yourself with a career
filled with opportunity and discovery.
7. Science as a global human endeavor Through science, humans seek to improve their
understanding and explanations of the natural world.
Science influences society by posing, and responding
to, social and ethical questions, and scientific research
is itself influenced by the needs and priorities of
society.
Science is continually refining and expanding our
knowledge of the universe, and as it does, it leads to
new questions for future investigation. Science will
never be "finished." Science is a global human
endeavor. People all over the world participate in the
process of science.
8. Science as a process Science as a process of investigation into the natural
world and the knowledge generated through that
process. Scientists use multiple research methods to
study the natural world. Data collected through
scientific research must be analyzed and interpreted to
be used as evidence. It provides an objective,
standardized approach to conducting experiments and,
in doing so, improves their results. By using a
standardized approach in their investigations, scientists
can feel confident that they will stick to the facts and
limit the influence of personal, preconceived notions.

Activity 4. Designing My Future Science Class
Your goal as a future science teacher should be to engage your students to love learning and
doing science. What are the features of an ideal science? Characterize each of the elements
below.
