Nervous System

Context

The module on the Nervous System was one of my favorites the cases were
quite brief and straight to the point. I really like to study modules where the important
parts of the topics are highlighted. I think we get to have the best bang for our buck
because in just a short amount of time, we were able to understand all the important
concepts from the module without having to stress out so much. That for me is
important because that is when learning is most effective. The following Program
outcomes were highlighted in this module: PO # 1, clinical competence, PO #2, effective
communication, PO # 7, engaging in continuing personal development, PO #8, adhering
to ethical, professional and legal standards, PO #9, demonstrating dedication to service
and PO #10, practicing social accountability.

Experience

This module was interesting for me because I have heard a lot of comments
about this module from the higher year levels. My friends from senior clerkship would
tell me that I should take this module seriously, and if possible, more seriously than
other modules because this module is difficult just like the nervous system module in
second year. In this module, we had several activities such as the SGD. Honestly, SGD
was quite interesting because this module was quite short and straight to the point. PO
#1 and #2 were highlighted in SGD. Other activities included the lectures which
highlights PO’s #2, #7, #8, #9, #10. Lectures were helpful because they were pre-
recorded and we had the option to just replay them whenever we had time. And finally,
another activity was the actual exam. PO’s #1, #7, and #9 were demonstrated in the
actual exam of this module.
Reflection

I feel like this module is essential to the whole medical course because there are
a lot of patients with problems on their nervous system. For example, a lesion on the
subthalamic portion of the brain can cause hemiballismus. For SGD, I feel like PO #1
was highlighted due to the fact that we have to read ahead all the sources given to us
and prepare diligently for it. PO #2 was also highlighted because we had to effectively
discuss what we have prepared. For the lectures, PO’s #2, #7, #9, and #10 were
highlighted because each time we have a lecture, we learn a little bit more about the
module, we improve ourselves as students and as future physicians, and we take
responsibility, and we dedicate ourselves as early as now to the journey of learning
medicine. For the actual exam of this module, PO’s #1, #7, and #9 were demonstrated
because it requires competence to learn about the module and it also requires us to
develop as students by adjusting to the difficulty and lastly, we have to fully dedicate
ourselves if we want to become doctors one day.

Action

My first plan of action is to be a student at home. This is very applicable to due

the pandemic and is necessary because if I stay home and do all my work here, I will
not risk my family getting sick. I will do my best to go outside only if necessary. I will do
my best to learn as much as I can and do my part as a citizen to stay home and avoid
any preventable risks. That should be my first plan because I feel like that is the most
applicable and most important plan of action during this time. My second plan of action
is to improve on my time management skills. This module in my opinion is short but at
the same time, one of the most interesting. It would be advantageous to me if I will be
able to improve time management skills so that I will be able to make the most out of my
time without having to worry about not having enough of it to rest and recover. Another
plan of action is to read more. The nervous system module had short cases but the
lectures were quite lengthy and it would be better if I could manage my time better.

Evaluation
Overall, my attitude for this module was fair because I always believe that there
is room to improve. My mindset was towards the holiday coming and I think that cost
me. This module is brief and I managed to finish reading the sources given to us. During
SGD’s, I was also able to share what I know about the topic. I was able to also read
ahead of time and I did not wait until last minute to read for SGD which of course helped
me during exams. This module was satisfactory because I feel like everyone was able
to benefit from it. We were able to tackle to different disorders of the nervous system
and from the cases given, we were able to localize the lesions and I feel like that is
important since I know there are a lot of patients suffering from these kinds of disorders.
I really enjoyed learning from this module and I hope we will be able to encounter more
modules like this.
