Thesis Statement: The essay flashes the changes produced by the recently created time
convention. The changes however are equally beneficial and risky, making the choosing of sides a
significant matter of perspective.
I. Time is a state of mind that has been changed over long periods of time by the
impact of industrialism. - Lozano
A. Time is presented not as a scientific element, but as a consciousness that is impacted
by how humans perceive it.
B. Throughout history, time is divided into two major concepts:
1. The Pre-Industrialism Era focuses on man’s connection with nature as it is
also man’s link with time.
2. The Industrialism Era and the time period after are driven by the constant
ticking of the clock, the modern man never ceasing to pause in his own busy
life.
TRANSITION: Huxley strongly differentiated these two eras, showing the reader two
different perceptions of time which could both be weighed by their advantages and
disadvantages.
II. Huxley highlights properly and unbiasedly the psychological drawbacks of the new
time consciousness. -Alonte
A. The problems he stated were problems that are present in many people today.
1. There is a constant need to organize our time into fixed blocks.
2. He emphasized the stress created by managing workloads.
3. Every schedule means something very important.
TRANSITION: The new awareness does give a lot of stress, however, this stress is also
might also be a product of industrialism itself.
IV. He over-emphasizes the lack of nature in our society and the importance of cosmic
time. -Odal
A. Huxley stresses the lack of nature in our society; factories and offices have already
replaced much of the plants and trees.
B. Time moves at a snail’s pace for a man who lives in a pre-industrial world; he doesn’t
care much about every passing of a minute, for he was not made aware of it.
TRANSITION: Since the coming of the machine-governed age, man has lost touch with
nature and instead has a newfound connection to the machines.
V. The essay gives no positive future on the path of industrialism -
Salvador/Lozano/Alonte
A. Industrialism produces progress, stability, and technology;
B. The essay focuses on the adversities that humans receive in exchange for the new
consciousness.
C. It overlooks the fact that the new concept of time speeds up the development of
society.
1. The essay overlooks the efficiency that humans have adopted in their
lifestyles that lead to better results at work that may benefit society.
2. The concept of ‘constantly losing time’ allows humans to value their time.
