PEN Subject Title: Content and Pedagogy in the Mother Tongue-Based Credits: 3 units
Multilingual Education
A. Subject Description:
Comprehensive understanding of elements of mother-tongue, appreciation of local
literature, and utilization of developmentally appropriate language teaching strategies for the
mother tongue.

B. Objectives:
At the end of the course, you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding on the philosophical and legal bases of MTB-MLE;
2. Utilize varied differentiated teaching in the Mother Tongue, Filipino and English to facilitate teaching
and learning;
3. Appreciate the use of local literature to enhance literacy skills and to strengthen the use of MTB-
MLE (1.4.1) and nurture and inspire learner participation;
4. Show skills in the selection, development and use of variety of teaching and learning resources
including ICT to address the learning goals of Mother Tongue;
5. Demonstrate familiarity with a range of strategies for communicating learner needs and progress in
the use of Mother tongue;
6. Demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies that are inclusive of learners from indigenous
groups;
7. Implement teaching strategies that are responsive to the learners’ linguistic, cultural, socio-
economic and religious backgrounds;
8. Demonstrate an understanding of the range of verbal and non-verbal classroom communication
strategies that support learner understanding, participation, engagement and achievement; and
9. Demonstrate knowledge of the design, selection, organization and use of diagnostic, formative and
summative assessment strategies consistent with curriculum requirements.

The Final Grade is computed as follows:
a. Class Standing
Written Works -30%
Performance Task/Requirements -30%
Periodical Exam -40%
TOTAL -100%
b. The Periodical Grade is computed as follows:

PG = (0.60 x Class Standing) + (0.40 x Periodical Exam)

c. The Final Grade is computed as follows:

FG =(0.17×P1) +(0.17×P2) +(0.16×P3) +(0.50xFE)


Where:
o FG refers to the Final Grade
o P1 refers to the First Period Grade
o P2 refers to the Second Period Grade
o P3 refers to the Third Period Grade
o FE refers to the Final Examination
