Adrenal Cortex

The adrenal cortex is an essential endocrine gland that secretes steroid hormones. It consists of three layers that produce different hormones: the outer layer produces glucocorticoids, the middle layer produces mineralocorticoids like aldosterone, and the inner layer produces sex hormones. The hormones are synthesized from cholesterol and transported through the blood, either loosely bound to plasma proteins or tightly bound to carrier proteins like corticosteroid-binding globulin or sex hormone-binding globulin. Most of the hormones are degraded in the liver and excreted in bile and feces, with some excreted in urine.
