It specifies all BP general requirements for carbon, alloy and series 300 type stainless steel pipe that are within its stated scope. Local or national statutory regulations in the country of operation must be complied with and may impose additional or limiting requirements. ‘The value of this Standard to its users will be significantly enhanced by their regular participation in its improvement and updating. For this reason, users are urged to inform BP of their experiences in all aspects of its application. Use of Language Throughout this document, the words ‘will’, ‘may’, ‘should’, ‘shall and ‘mst’, when used inthe context of actions by BP or others, have specific meanings as follows: (a) ‘Will’ is used normally in connection with an action by BP, rather than by a contractor or supplier. (b) ‘May’ is used where alternatives are equally acceptable. (c) 'Should’ is used where a provision is preferred. (a) ‘Shall" is used where a provision is mandatory. (e) ‘must’ is used only where a provision is a statutory requirement. Note that alternative or preferred requirements may be qualified by BP in an accompanying specification. In the BP Engineering Codes of Practice and Standards, the term ‘approve’, as applied to BP, is used where BP does not wish a design to proceed unless certain features have been agreed in writing with a contractor or supplier. ‘This does not imply that all details of a document have been considered by BP and does not affect the design responsibilities of the contractor or supplier, which will be covered separately by BP as appropriate in the Conditions of Contract. Nominal pipe sizes (NPS) are ANSI or API designations which have not yet been metricated. However, metric DN nunbers are given in brackets; these are stated in ANSI B16.5, though not yet clearly established in national or international standards. bar Except when referring to a pressure differential, the unit is stated as gauge pressure, bar (ga) or absolute pressure, bar (abs). Gauge pressure is measured from standard atmospheric pressure of 1.01325 bar. Referenced Documents Appendix A gives a full list of Codes and Standards referred to in this BP Standard. BP ENGINEERING STANDARD 174 PIPE FOR REFINERIES, CHEMICAL PLANT AND ‘ASSOCIATED INSTALLATIONS INTRODUCTION 1a 1.2 1.2.1 1.2.2 1.3 1.3.1 ‘Scope This Standard specifies BP general requirements for carbon, alloy and stainless steel pipes to API SL, ASTM and BS 3601 to 3605 series of standards. Tt excludes special materials, nonmetallic pipe, copper and duplex stainless steel pipes which are the subject of separate documents. ‘This standard is split into two parts: PART 1 BP General Requirements for Pipes and their Application. PART 2 The Manufacturing Requirements for Electric Fusion Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe. Application of this Standard To apply this Standard, supplementary specification and approval actions are required by BP, purchaser, or both, to adapt it to each specific project application. These are indicated by an asterisk (*) preceding a paragraph number and summarised in the Appendix. Additionally, BP may select options or waive requirements in this Standard, depending on the nature of the project concerned. Definitions In this Standard the following definitions apply: BP: The British Petroleum Company p.1.c., an associate or subsidiary, or other organisation as defined’ in the Conditions of Contract on a project. purchaser: A contractor acting on behalf of BP, or BP itself in the case of a direct purchase. Note: Any specific application of the terms and responsibilities for the parties defined above is a matter for the Conditions of Contract on the project. ENGINEERING STANDARD PAGE 1 174 PIPE FOR REFINERIES, CHEMICAL PLANT AND REV. ‘ASSOCIATED INSTALLATIONS1A 1.4.1 1.4.2 1.4.3 austenitic steels: Chromiumickel steels included in the ANSI 300 series, e.g. types 304, 304L, 316 and 316L. defect: An imperfection of _ sufficient magnitude to warrant rejection of the pipe weld based on the assessment critieria in this Standard. imperfection: A discontinuity or irregularity in the pipe weld detected by the radiographic means outlined in this standard. Quality Assurance Manufacturers and stockists should be approved by a national accreditation scheme, or operate a quality system conforming to BS 5750 : Parts 2 and 5 or an equivalent standard. For critical applications as defined by BP, conformity to BS 5750 : Parts 1 and 4 or an equivalent standard may additionally be required. ‘The manufacturer or stockist shall ensure that specified quality requirements are also applied to the materials and services provided by others. This, for example, may entail a requirement for full material traceability. ENGINEERING STANDARD PAGE 2 174 | PIPE FOR REFINERIES, CHEMICAL PLANT AND REV. ‘ASSOCIATED INSTALLATIONSBP GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PIPES AND THEIR APPLICATION APPLICATION 2a 2.2 BAL 3.2 3.3 This part of the Standard specifies BP general requirements for pipes used in the following installations: (a) Refineries (b) Chemical plant (c) Terminals (d) Offshore installations, except where specifically excluded by BP (e) Crude oil and gas gathering centres, to the extent specified by BP (£) Marketing terminals (to the extent specified by BP for a particular installation) ‘These requirements do not apply to the following, unless otherwise specified by BP: (a) Main pipelines in land, sea or subsea locations (see BP Std. 166) (b) Heating, ventilating and domestic water systems within buildings (c) Cement Mortar Lined Steel Pipe and Fittings (See BP Std. 106). The requirements are identified by reference to the manufacturing route; those pipes manufactured by a continuous forming and welding process and those pipes usually above NPS 6 (DN 150) manufactured by an individual forming and welding process. GENERAL ‘This Standard is based on the requirements of ASTM A 312 and A 358. Only certain manufacturers will be considered by BP as suitable for producing pipe to this Standard; the pipe manufacturer will be chosen by BP. CONTINUOUSLY WELDED PIPES 2 BP Manufacturing Categories Category 1A longitudinally welded pipe with the weld subjected to 100% ultrasonic or eddy current testing and 2% radiographic examination. Category 1B Longitudinally welded pipe with the weld subjected to 1008 ultrasonic or eddy current testing. 12.2 materials ‘The austenitic stainless steels shall have chemical compositions as specified in ASTM A 312. Where filler metal additions are made, the compositions shall be chosen such that the resistance to corrosion and other properties of the weld deposited are equal to, or better than, the parent metal. This shall be achieved either by pickling after heat treatment or by bright annealing. Finished lengths shall have smooth ends and all surfaces shall be free from burrs, scale and defects. Mechanical ‘Tests Room temperature tensile properties shall be determined and conform to those specified in ASTM A 312. Flattening tests shall be made to ASTM A 530 at the frequency specified in ASTM A 312. Flanging tests shall be made to ASIM A 450 at the frequency specified in 12.6.2 above. The width of flange shall be not less than 15% of the outside diameter of the pipe. Non-Destructive Testing Hydrostatic Testing Hydrostatic testing shall be carried out on pipe to the requirements of ASIM A 530; however, where the manufacturer can demonstrate that either ‘of the eddy current or ultrasonic tests (see 12.7.2) is superior to hydrostatic testing, then either of these tests may be accepted by the purchaser in lieu of hydrostatic testing.
