Solutions Tutorial 6

1. This document is from a tutorial on Maxwell's equations for time-varying fields. It contains examples of problems involving Faraday's law of induction and displacement current. 2. Some examples calculate the induced emf in coils due to changing magnetic fields. Others find the displacement current in capacitors with time-varying voltages. 3. The document also examines the continuity equation, charge dissipation, and relationships between electric and magnetic fields in electromagnetic waves.

Faraday’s Law

1. A coil consists of 100 turns of wire wrapped around a square frame of sides 0.25 m. The coil is
centered at the origin with each of its sides parallel to the x- or y-axis. Find the induced emf across
the open-circuited ends of the coil if the magnetic field is given by
a) B = 20e-3t az (T)
b) B = 20 cos x cos 103t az (T)
c) B = 20 cos x sin 2y cos 103t az (T)

2. The rectangular conducting loop shown below rotates at 6000 rpm in a uniform magnetic flux
density given by B = 50 x 10-3 ay (T). Determine the current induced in the loop if its internal
resistance is 0.5 .

3. The transformer shown in Fig. P6.8 consists of a long wire coincident with the z-axis carrying a
current I = I0 cos ωt, coupling magnetic energy to a toroidal coil situated in the x–y plane and
centered at the origin. The toroidal core uses iron material with relative permeability µ r, around
which 100 turns of a tightly wound coil serves to induce a voltage Vemf, as shown in the figure.

a) Develop an expression for emf.

b) Calculate Vemf for f = 60 Hz, r = 4000, a = 5 cm and b = 6 cm, c = 2 cm, and I0 = 50 A.

4. A 50 cm long metal rod rotates about the z-axis at 90 rpm. With end 1 fixed at the origin as shown
in the figure given. Determine the induced emf V12 if B = 2 x 10-4 az (T).

5. The loop shown in the figure given moves away from a wire carrying a current I1 = 10 A at a
constant velocity u = 7.5 ay (m/s). If R = 10 Ω and the direction of I2 is as defined in the figure,

6. The plates of a parallel-plate capacitor have areas of 10 cm2 each and are separated by 2 cm. The
capacitor is filled with a dielectric material with ε=4ε0, and the voltage across it is given by
V (t )  30 cos 2  10 6 t (V). Find the displacement current.

7. A coaxial capacitor of length l = 6 cm uses an insulating dielectric material with εr = 9. The radii of
the cylindrical conductors are 0.5 cm and 1 cm. Find the displacement current if the voltage applied
across the capacitor is V (t )  50 sin(120t ) (V).
