<Sentence Connectors & Conjunctions>

*All sentence connectors can turn into a conjunction by getting


attached to a verb in the first sentence.
(it makes sense because verb is the last element is a sentence)

1. 그리고

1) And

-also functions as a Noun Connector & Verb Connector

Noun connector)
Noun1 그리고 Noun 2
Noun1, Noun2, 그리고 Noun 3

Verb Connector) turns into conjunction, just like a sentence


connector

Conjunction Form)
Present Tense: Base Stem + 고

Past Tense : Past Stem + 고

Future Tense: Future Stem + 고

2) Then

Same Conjunction Rule

2. 그렇지만 / 하지만 :

1)But

Conjunction Form)
Present Tense : Base Stem + 지만

Past Tense : Past Stem + 지만

Future Tense : Future Stem + 지만

3. 그런데 / 근데

1) But

Conjunction Form)

*When combined with an Adjective :


Present: Base Stem + -ㄴ / 은 + 데

Past: Past Stem + 는 + 데

Future: Future Stem + -ㄴ +데 (텐데 is used more)

*When combined with a Verb (& Adjectives whose stem comes from
verb words) :
Present: Base Stem + 는 + 데
Past: Past Stem + 는 + 데
Future: Future Stem + ㄴ + 데

*Tip: 그런데/근데 is the only sentence connector that has different


rules for Adjective and Verbs. (in most cases, adjectives and verbs
are treated pretty much the same.)

근데 : 2) By the way (sentence starter)


(when saying something out of the blue or to break silence)

근데 저 부탁 하나 해도 돼요?
근데 나 핸드폰 좀 빌려줄 수 있어?
근데 여기 진짜 예쁘다!
4. 그러나: “But” in a very formal sentence (usually used in writing)

Conjugation Form)

Present: Base Stem + 나


Past: Past Stem + 으나

Level of Formality (seriousness, not necessarily politeness)

그러나 > 하지만/그렇지만 > 그런데/근데


그런데/ 근데 are most commonly used in speaking, and most difficult to learn..
(oh the irony…)
