How to write an informal letter

 You must address your friend using the correct punctuation: Dear Amy,
 You must plan your letter in a way to make it interesting and to grab your
reader’s/friend’s attention.
 Your letter should consist of four-five paragraphs: introduction, two-three
main body paragraphs and a conclusion.
 It is a good idea to use idioms and add a sense of humour.
 It is always good to get your friend involved.

 Phrases to use as an introduction

 How are you? How’s life treating you?


 Sorry, I haven’t been in touch. I was overwhelmed with exams.
 Let me tell you about my holiday in Greece, it was fabulous.

 Idioms you can use in your letter: (refer to the idioms worksheet)

 Thrilled to bits / over the moon (very happy)


 I have a mind like a sieve (I forget things easily or quickly)
 It cost an arm and a leg (it is very expensive)
 It’s driving me up the wall ( to be very angry and annoyed)

 Using fillers to explain

 You will never guess what I went through last week!


 To be honest, it was an excellent holiday……….
 When you hear this, it will keep you on the edge of your seat

 Last Paragraph – Phrases


 It was great catching up
 I must go now as my mum has bombarded me with errands
 Let’s get together soon

 Checking

 Check you have covered everything in the question


 Check your punctuation and spelling
 Check you have explained the three points
 Check you have a range of idioms
 Check your use of grammar
 Do not use slang language (ain’t / dude / cursing words / xoxo / gunna /
wanna / gutta/ … etc)
 Use short forms /contractions (won’t / hasn’t / isn’t / I’m ..etc)
