Life and Career Skills

Functional Literacy Concepts

People can read the words in the text, but can they understand
things like arguments? What about writing? Students can write or
type sentences, but can they express complete and coherent ideas?
Employees can count, but can they analyze charts, interpret
statistics, or edit budgets? Functional literacy is about developing
and practicing the skills and knowledge in order to have a
functional society. It enables human to continue to use reading and
writing and calculation for his/her own and community’s
development. Obviously, reading or writing words and numbers is
not enough to assess literacy. People must be able to understand
and use these words and numbers for practical purposes, such as
brainstorming and problem solving. Functional literacy is more
important than some people think, it is the cornerstone of
students’ academic and potential career success.
