Lesson 2-Triangles - BEED 2D - 2-3-2021

This document provides a lesson on triangles for intermediate grade students. It defines a triangle, lists properties of triangles such as vertices, bases, altitudes and medians. It also describes how to classify triangles by angles (acute, right, obtuse) and by sides (equilateral, isosceles, scalene). The lesson gives examples of different triangle types and problems involving finding missing angles and classifying triangles. It concludes with having students reflect on effective ways to teach these triangle concepts to future pupils.

LESSON 2: Triangles

Course/Year/Section : BEED 2-D

Subject : TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN THE INTERMEDIATE GRADES
Objectives : At the end of the session, the students should be able to:
a. describe the attributes/properties of triangles using concrete objects
or models
b. identify and describe triangles according to sides and angles
c. solve word problems involving triangles
Date : February 3, 2021

Let’s Focus:

What is triangle?
In Geometry, a triangle is a closed two dimensional shape with three straight sides. A
triangle is also a polygon.

Additional Properties of Triangle:

1. The vertex of a triangle is a corner of the triangle.

2. The base of a triangle can be any one of the three sides, usually the one drawn at the bottom.

3. The altitude of the triangle is the perpendicular from the base to the opposite vertex. (The base may
need to be extended). Since there are three possible bases, there are also three possible altitudes. The
three altitudes intersect at a single point called the orthocenter of the triangle.

4. The median of a triangle is a line from a vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side. The three
medians intersect at a single point called the centroid of the triangle.

5. The exterior angle of a triangle is the angle formed between one side of a triangle and the extension
of its adjacent side

KINDS OF TRIANGLES ACCORDING TO ANGLES

KINDS OF TRIANGLES ACCORDING TO SIDES

To classify the triangles according to their sides, we measure the length of its sides. Triangles
can be classified by their sides as equilateral triangle, isosceles triangle, and scalene triangle.

KINDS OF TRIANGLES ACCORDING TO BOTH SIDES AND ANGLES

Triangle with equal angles is called equiangular triangle. In an equiangular triangle, each
of the interior angles measures 600.

Angles in a Triangle

The sum of the interior angles in a triangle is 180 0.

An exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the two opposite or remote interior
angles.

The sum of the exterior angles in a triangle is 3600.

The exterior angle and interior angle is 1800.

Let’s Solve:

A. Classify the following triangles as acute, right or obtuse.

1. 4.

2. 5.

3.

B. Complete the table by identifying the kind of triangle according to sides. Choose among scalene,
isosceles, and equilateral.

2.

3. Find the measure of the unknown interior angle marked a and exterior angle marked b.

cra-2-3-2021
D. Solve. Show your complete solution.

1. The interior angles of a triangle is in a ratio of 2:3:5. Find the biggest angle.

2. One of the acute angle in a right triangle measures 36.5 0. Find the other acute angle.

3. The figure is not drawn to scale. F

Triangle EFG is an equilateral triangle. Find the measure

of angle DFE D 28 0 G E

4. Find the measure of angle d.

5. The figure is not drawn to scale. Find the measure of angle k.

“To exist, the triangle demands three complementary elements: love, power and danger.
Mixed incautiously, these elements, like those in physics, are volatile and potentially
explosive.”
