Site Execution

As site execution department concerns with structural work, we deal with the
quality assurance and proper co-ordination of work to be performed on site. Site engineers used to
plan, organize, supervise & give technical advice while I used to manage & supervise different
parts of execution by ensuring that the work gets completed on time and within budget.
Here are the different activities which I participated in

4.1 Surveying, Marking & Setting Out

 An ‘Open Foundation’ was used on site & the Excavation was done on the Constructable Area.
 After the cleaning of Excavated Area, Wooden props were fixed on the sides of the Boundaries.
 Then with the help of Centre Line Plan & Auto-Cad drawing Co-ordinates were obtained.
 This Co-ordinates helped Total Station in giving the exact points required for footing corners &
column centers.
 Soling was done on that marked area by placing Angular Rock Stones of Medium & Small Sizes.

Figure 2 Foundation Area Figure 3 Soling

17
NICMAR PGP-ACM

4.2 Ground PCC

 PCC was done to increase the contact area of RCC with the soil underneath.
 After the Soling, it was covered by excavated Soil & on which Plane Cement Concreting was
done to prevent water entering from ground.
 The Artificial Sand was used for Concreting with Mix Proportion as 1:2:4
 The Thickness of PCC was 9 inches

Figure 2 Laying PCC

Figure 3 PCC in Foundation

18
NICMAR PGP-ACM

4.3 Reinforcement of Footings & Columns

 As we have to build 6 storeys building, the load coming on foundation was very heavy.
 Hence, a mix of Isolated Stepped Footings & Combined Footings were used.
 It takes the Concentrated Load of the Columns and Spreads it out over a large area, so that the
actual weight on the soil does not exceed the safe bearing capacity of the soil.
 As per the drawings, Steel mesh of Footings & Columns of given Size & Specifications was made
& placed on PCC on marked points.
 The Coverings were provided at the bottom & on the sides of Footings & Column Reinforcement
to arrest attack from Corrosion & Fire from atmospheric condition.
 The steel bars of Column were bend at 45 0 to resist applied force & then tied to steel Mesh of
Footings by Binding Wires.

Figure 6 Combined Footing Figure 4 Placing Column in Mesh

19
NICMAR PGP-ACM

4.4 Shuttering

 Wooden Shuttering was provided for

Footings, Columns & Beams.
 The ply of suitable length & height was cut
as per the specifications mentioned in
drawings.
 It was then placed & fixed around the
reinforcement. The firm supports were given
around this shuttering so that it won’t get
bend while concreting.
 The oiling was done on the inner side of the
shuttering to protect ply from swelling, easy
removal & to provide good finishing
surface.

4.5 Concreting

 This perhaps the most important stage of Execution as once it’s done then it’s unlikely to make
any changes.
Pouring Concrete in Footings
 Concreting increases the Strength & Durability of structure.
 The M20 grade concrete used for all RCC work with concrete mix proportion of Cement, Sand &
Aggregates as 1:1.5:3 respectively.
 The Concrete Mixer was rotated for about 2 minutes to mix concrete ingredients into homogenous
slurry state by adding suitable water quantity.
 Once it’s done, it was then transferred in wheelbarrows for easy transportation & pouring to
various RCC structures.

21
NICMAR PGP-ACM

4.6 De-shuttering & Curing

 After the hardening of Concrete, the shuttering gets removed within 2-3 days depending on
the type of structure.
 During removing of formwork, side plies were removed neatly so that the Nails & Ply both
can be used repetitively.
 After removing all the formwork, Curing was done on the concreted part 2-3 times a day to
prevent it from shrinkage, Cracks & to make structure stronger & more durable.
 Curing of Columns were done by covering them with wet gunny bags.

4.7 Septic Tank

 During my internship period, brickwork was only used for septic tank which was installed below
the ground surface at 1.8m.
 PCC was done on the area of septic tank & then it was built to treat & separate Solids, Liquids
from sewage water by distributing in 3 layers i.e. Sludge layer, clear zone & scum layer.
 The Size of this tank was 5.3m x 3.3m x 2.2 m & was designed by considering 200 persons in
building.
 The English bond type of brickwork was used & to strengthen this bond Mortar was applied in
between the bricks by using trowels.

4.8 Water Tank

 2 Water Tanks each of capacity 25000 litres were provided to both the wings.
 This water Tanks has dimensions of (3.6m x 3m x 2.4m) with 0.5m x 0.5m chamber.
 The Chamfer Reinforcement was provided in Water Tank for safety purpose & to prevent
damage to the edges of tank.
 After Reinforcement & Formwork, Concreting was done stepwise around all the sides of
water tank than concreting one side completely.

Figure 7 Reinforcement of Water Tank

4.9 Lift

 2 Lifts were provided in both the wings of dimension 1.8m x 1.8m.

 This Lift were rest on 2 columns and walls with thickness of 150 mm.
 It was built in such a way that 5 ft of distance is maintained in between ground level & bottom.
surface of lift.

Figure 8 Lift

4.10 Backfilling & Compaction

 After checking the foundation that if any material or anything important left out, we
backfilled the excavated Soil to foundation with the help of Backhoe.
 It took 3 days for backfilling to reach 15-20 cm above the ground level.
 Then watering was done on backfilled area so that soil set down quickly and with the help

Quality Checking & Safety Measures taken on site

 As a site engineer, we ensured that work going on site is as per design, drawings &
specifications.
 We checked for Number of bars in footings, columns, curtailments provided in beams,
spacings & sizes of steel mesh etc.
 We also checked the quality of concrete while mixing and raw materials ordered on site.
 We checked the condition of ply before formwork and avoided those which were broke.
and swelled so that structure will attain its desired shape.
 During shuttering we make sure that proper supports are been given so that while
concreting formwork stays firm & strong.
 Clear Instructions were given to all about the unsafe act & unsafe condition.
 Shoes, Masks & Sanitiser were made compulsory to all.
 Electrical Safety, Health Safety were followed while using Circular shaw to cut bars.
 Time-to-time safety inspections were followed up by Team members.

28
NICMAR PGP-ACM

Chapter 06

Construction Materials

6.1 Cement

 The function of cement is to combine with water to form cement paste. This paste on setting
& hardening binds the aggregate together providing us the strength, durability & water-tighten
to the concrete. Quality of cement is based on grade of cement.
 We have used PPC cement for pcc work and OPC 53 grade for RCC work.
 Birla Shakti Cement was used for RCC work weighing 50 Kg per bag.

Figure 30 Cement Bag Figure 31 Storage of Cement Bag

29
NICMAR PGP-ACM

6.2 Sand

 It is the fine aggregate which passes through 4.75 mm I.S. sieve and entirely retain on 75 microns.
 In order to obtain a dense and strong concrete with less quantity of cement sand is used which also
increases the workability of the concrete mix.
 The 2 types of sand i.e., artificial sand & Wash Sand were used on site for PCC and RCC work
respectively.
 Artificial Sand is nothing but mixture of crushed particles of stone which then gets polished with
powder while Wash sand is made up of crushed particles of rock stone & No powder is added in it
which gives comparatively better strength.

Figure 13 Sand

6.3 Coarse Aggregates

 This are the aggregate which passes through

75 mm I.S. sieve and entirely retain on Coarse Aggregates
4.75 mm
 These aggregates used in concreting in order to
increase the strength & durability of structure.
 Coarse aggregates we used on site were of
20 to 30 mm.

Figure 14 Coarse Aggregate

30
NICMAR PGP-ACM

6.4 Steel

 As concrete is weak in Tension, Steel bars were used to provide Strength & Durability to a
structure as they are highly strong in tension, shear, bending moment and torsion.
 The Steel bars used on site were of 8mm, 10mm, 12mm &16mm in diameters & as per the
specifications and sizes mentioned in drawings they were cut down and used accordingly.
 The weight of a steel bar was calculated as D 2/162 per meter & on multiplying it by its
length (12m) we get weight of a bar.
 The Kapila steel of Fe500 grade was used for reinforcement.

Diameter (mm) 8 10 12 16
Weight of a Bar (Kg) 0.395 0.617 0.89 1.58
No. of Bars in Bundle 15 11 8 5
Figure 15 Binding Wire

Figure 16 Steel in Bundles Figure 17 Steel Bars

6.5 Binding wire

 Binding wire was used on site to tie steel

bars in footings, to tie stirrups to columns,
column to steel mesh, etc so that while
shuttering & Concreting, steel bars won’t
move.

31
NICMAR PGP-ACM

6.6 Dubber Stone

 Dubber stone was required on site for soling purpose only.

 In order to prevent RCC structure from weakening, PCC work has to be carried out which is
nothing but pouring concrete on area where soling is done.
 It was of non-uniform shape with average size of 25-30 cm.

Figure 18 Stones

Brick
6.7 Brick

 Burnt Clay bricks were used in the walls of

septic tank which makes structure cost-
effective.
 The Bricks that were used had dimension of
22cm x 15cm x 10cm with frog size of
16cm x 9cm.

Figure 19 Bricks
32
NICMAR PGP-ACM

6.8 Plywood

 Plywood has wide role in construction process specially during concreting to gain the desired
shape of structure as well as to withstand the stresses occurred while execution.
 Before using the plywood, they were checked whether they are in good condition and then
used by applying oil from inner side of shuttering.2
 Plywood was cut as per our requirements and were stored in closed section to prevent it from
sudden rainfall.
 With the help of nails and binding wire they were temporarily fixed around the reinforcement.

Figure 20 Plywood for Formwork

33
NICMAR PGP-ACM

6.9 Wooden Props

 Wooden Props are temporary structure which are used to support loads during construction.
 On site, they were used in water tank, septic tank, columns to give firm supports so that there
won’t be any error in size of structure after concreting.
 They were also used to fix the boundaries of site and marking the centre points of columns.

Figure 21 Wooden Props

6.10 Water

 It is very important in making concrete as it

combines with cement and other aggregates to
form a binding paste which on setting makes
structure stronger and more durable.
 For 1 bag of cement around 25-30 litres of
water consumed which gives water-cement
ratio as 0.6.
 During this project, source of water for
concreting, curing & many activities was a Figure 22 Tube Well

Chapter 07

Construction Tools, Equipment & Machinery

For every construction activity we need some tools, equipment and machinery to
carry out the work efficiently in minimum time. This are some pictures whose uses I observed and
learned during my internship period.

7.2 Construction Equipment

7.2.1 Concrete Mixer

 Concrete Mixer was used on site to make fresh concrete of required quality and quantity.
 The cement, sand & aggregates of suitable proportions were added in drum with approximately
10 litres of water.
 The mixing paddles in the mixer rotates at around 15-20 rpm to bind the materials together & to
form good concrete paste.
 The Mixer was rotated for at least 2 minutes each revolution.

Figure 57 Concrete Mixer Figure 58 Mixing paddles

7.2.2 Total Station

 The Total Station used on site was of sokkia

which helped us in giving very precise &
accurate results for marking the centre points of
columns, corners of steel mesh, for fixing the
boundary points, etc.
 At first tripod stand is set up on which Total
station machine was fixed and after levelling
the bubble tube, co-ordinates were put which
were obtained from AutoCAD drawings.
 Prism Rod helps in getting the ground points
and all of these are marked w.r.t building face.
Figure 59 Total Survey

37
NICMAR PGP-ACM

7.3 Construction Machinery

7.3. Backhoe

 Backhoe played a crucial role on site in the part of Excavation & Backfilling as it was
mainly used for Loading & Unloading the materials from one place to another.
 It consists of an excavator bucket with diesel capacity of 128 lit to dig the surface & a
loader shovel bucket with hydraulic oil tank of 130 lit for loading the materials, to push-
spread & level the surface.
 The Loader Shovel Bucket consumes more fuel (10 lit/hr) than excavator bucket.
 With the help of cylinder piston, bucket can extend up to 7m long & around 4m in depth.
 There is operator cabin to handle the machinery, hydraulic jacks for extension, `outriggers
to use when there is weak strata & hard to transmit large load, etc which makes JCB more
reliable & efficient to use.
 At the time of excavation, the rate was Rs 800/hr but later it was increased to 900/hr.

Figure 60 Backhoe

38
NICMAR PGP-ACM

7.3.2 Dumper Truck

Challenges Faced

 To work in the pandemic situation with all safety measures was the biggest challenge.
 As because of the sudden rise in covid cases, strict lockdown was imposed for about 2 weeks
which delayed our project schedule.
 As few people continued to Mined illegally in Eco sensitive green zone named trimbakeshwar,
district magistrate & collector banned all the crushing plants in Nashik which caused heavy
shortage of raw materials required for making concrete.
 A Sudden rise in the prices of Steel and Aggregates increases the project cost by around 10-15%
and to balance it we have to increase the flat cost by 1 lakh each.
 Unpredicted heavy rain and storm hit hard on our shade where materials were stored and to
cover it in a very less time was a big challenge.
 Also, this heavy rainfall created extreme difficulty for JCB to move in and out as the whole site
area got muddy.
 Transportation of vehicles & unloading of materials was the biggest challenge as because of
congested space.
 Irregular power supply sometimes delayed in activities like curing, bar cutting, concreting, etc.

Key Learnings

 I am able to read and understand the different types of drawings.

 I get familiar to deal with customers
 I have performed different activities on site like handling total station, marking & centring with
the help of plumb off, Tieng binding wire, bending steel pipe, etc
 Observed & understand the difference between wash sand, artificial sand & natural sand
 Able to calculate brass from given measurements
 Required quantities of materials like steel, concrete & forecast the requirement
 Get familiar with different rates of materials, labours & machinery
 Chamfer reinforcement uses
 How to place the suitable formwork for different footings
 suitable concrete proportion
 To give firm support to the formwork as it shouldn’t get bend in the middle or failure
 T0 clear ground, do pcc and then put beam reinforcement to prevent it from rusting
 Before concreting always check the covering provided to the column, beams
 Material storage & handling labour.
 Adequate curing must be done to prevent from shrinking.
 Fuel efficiency of construction machinery has to be managed.
 Hooks need to be bend at 450
 Surrounding site area should remained clean as the increases grass, water clouds for several days
had increased the number of mosquitos.
 Security like watchman, cameras were provided to get safe from theft
 Experience is the best Teacher

Conclusion

Summer Internship in Bhagyashri developer was a great opportunity for me the overall learning
experience was very knowledgeable and enjoyable. The people on site have given me full liberty and
time which helped me getting familiar with real scenarios of construction industry. The observation
and self-learning skills were developed as during my internship period I got an opportunity to oversee
many activities at site like surveying, site planning, site execution, quality control, quantity
estimation, daily progress report, material management and storage, etc.

Interaction with labours and team members helped me in understanding the practical approach and
new insights on various areas. I learned how important is the interdisciplinary relationship for smooth
construction and timely completion of project. Working with experienced professionals helped in
solving many difficulties at site and enhancing technical skills for which I am very grateful to them.
This experience will help me in future for shaping my career.
