Introduction
Choking is a common cause of injury
and is the fourth leading cause of
unintentional injury in the US. In 2019
there were 1.6 million deaths from
choking per 100,000 population
What is
Choking?
Choking occurs when a foreign body
partly or completely blocks a person's
upper airway.
Where does it happen?

The obstruction

How to help someone who is choking:

FIRST AID: CHOKING


MILD CHOKING: ENCOURAGE THEM TO COUGH

Encourage them to keep coughing to


1 try and clear the blockage

Ask them to spit out the object if it's in

their mouth
SEVERE CHOKING: FIVE-AND-FIVE METHOD

Back Blows

1 Stand behind the person and slightly to one side. For children, kneel
down behind them.

Give 5 blows between their shoulder blades using the heel of your

hand

3 Check if the Blockage has cleared

4 if not, give up to 5 abdominal thrust


SEVERE CHOKING: FIVE-AND-FIVE METHOD

Abdominal Thrust ( known before as Heimlich Maneuver)

1 Stand behind the person who is choking.

2 Place your arms around their waist and bend them forward

3 Clench 1 fist and place it right above the belly button

4 Put the other hand on top of your fist and pull sharply inwards and
upward

4 Repeat this movement 5 times


FIVE-AND-FIVE METHOD FOR INFANTS

Back Blows

1 Lay, the infant face down, along with your forearm supported
by your thigh or lap

2 Give 5 blows between the infant's shoulder blades


FIVE-AND-FIVE METHOD FOR INFANTS

Chest Thrust

1 Turn the infant face-up

Place 2 fingers on the middle of the breastbone just below the


2 nipples

2 Give 5 quick thrust down

2 Continue the cycle until object is dislodged


CONCLUSION
First aid training is very important as it prolongs life. In
choking cases knowing the five-and-five method for choking
avoids casualty. We should always remember that prevention is
better than cure.
