Introduction
Choking is a common cause of injury
and is the fourth leading cause of
unintentional injury in the US. In 2019
there were 1.6 million deaths from
choking per 100,000 population
What is
Choking?
Choking occurs when a foreign body
partly or completely blocks a person's
upper airway.
Where does it happen?
The obstruction
happen at the
trachea and pharynx
Who is most at risk?
Elderly
Causes:
Adults Children
Eating/drinking too quickly Eating/drinking too quickly

Signs and Symptoms
Back Blows
1 Stand behind the person and slightly to one side. For children, kneel
down behind them.
Give 5 blows between their shoulder blades using the heel of your

hand
2 Place your arms around their waist and bend them forward
4 Put the other hand on top of your fist and pull sharply inwards and
upward
Back Blows
1 Lay, the infant face down, along with your forearm supported
by your thigh or lap
