5. Void Massing
Void mass cuts solid mass – draw profile – select – create Void form
Automatically cuts solid forms – if not then use cut geometry

Circle – cylinder or sphere

6.Variations in Massing
- Push/pull rotate face
- Push/pull rotate vertex
- Push/pull rotate edges
- Add profile (turn on XRAY) : Edit profile , rotate profile,
push/pull profile

7. Division, pattern and panels
Create new family – curtain panel pattern based

Select the profile from selecting the grid and changing the properties
Place a point, select a perpendicular plane , draft a profile, select
path and profile create form, load into project (mass).
8. Adaptive components : create a mass – divide -create a pattern
*Remember to turn on 3d snapping while creating the form
Create a form with 3D snapping with 4 points and 3 line segments -
create multiple suck forms – select all and create form
Select form divide surface – switch off V grids
- Create new family – Generic model Adaptive
- Select similar work place
- Place the same number of points (4)
- Make the points Adaptive
- Join points using reference lines

9. Mass by face
In the mass – click on load into project and place the mass in revit
architecture
Things to consider
- Zoom to fit to fit in the mass
- Turn on mass under mass & site- first tool
- Check zoom to fit in your 3D
Go to elevation – add levels – go to 3D select mass – mass floors –
select all the levels where you need mass floor plates
Go to wall by face – select the faces where you need walls – same for
floor by face – roof by face – last step mass can be turned off.

10. In-place Mass

Go to in-place mass-give the mass a name- Revit is basically going to
turn your revit architecture into massing interface directly so you can
do mass in the revit architecture template itself.

11. Introduction to parameters

- Conceptual mass – make a square – go to create – dimensions –

align and select the two opposite sides and dimension the same
– repeat for the other two sides as well
Select the dimensions – Add parameter and give them unique names
Can be controlled by using family types
Formula to relate them using family types
Make a cube – dimension the faces- for height change the work place
and dimension it

12. Using parameters for modelling:

Example of a column – example of a door
Different parameters for – rotation, material, offset, height,
length, breadth, angle etc

Create parameter using dimensions between work planes /

reference planes

13. Instance parameter & Type parameter

Instance parameter – can be changed directly on the properties
menu – different for every instance used.
Type parameter – same for all the instances placed – can be changed
by going to edit type in properties but changes the entire type so to
avoid this always EDIT TYPE -DUPLICATE – change values

14. Walls & Grids

- Wall thickness – edit type – add layers – change material
- Split walls – edit type – section preview – split wall – add layer
– select the split part – assign – modify
- Adding sweep and reveal in the sectional preview
- Height of the wall adjusted using top and bottom constraints,
unconnected height for adding height that we want on our
own. Offset to change height accordingly
- Edit profile of the wall makes wall behave like extrusion so can
edit it like wise.
- Using curtain wall – 3 types
- Curtain wall on normal wall and cut geometry
Grids
- Draw grid lines – visible in elevations and sections as well

Can’t be distributed or copied without prior permission from Lomos Enterprises Pvt Ltd
Revit Handout by Lomos Enterprises Pvt Ltd

- Click on grid line and tick mark on the other side of the grid line
without labelling to enable labelling
- Automatic grid labelling based on the previous value given!

15. Windows & Doors

Both behave exactly same – all properties to be changed under
properties – edit type
Make sure to duplicate so existing features don’t change
To Change the entire appearance – click on door/window and edit
family – all elements in the family are components with basic
modelling tools used so can edit extrusion / new extrusion can be
made – materials in properties for new extrusion.
If you don’t wish to change all the windows and doors then make
sure to save family before loading into the project. Else overwriting
will change all the doors and windows in the project.

16. Floors, roofs and ceiling

Floors & ceiling
- Draw like an extrusion
- Edit type- structure – edit – add layers change thickness and
material
- For different height floors (drop slab, etc) just add an offset –
positive or negative for that piece of floor slab.
Roof
3 types – roof by face (already covered), roof by footprint & roof
by extrusion.
a. Roof by face covered by mass by face

Can’t be distributed or copied without prior permission from Lomos Enterprises Pvt Ltd
Revit Handout by Lomos Enterprises Pvt Ltd

b. Roof by footprint just draw the footprint of the roof – click on

the roof lines and switch off the defines slope next to it by
clicking on the line and then turning off defines slope
c. Roof by extrusion – select a plane and draw the profile (single
line) of the roof and finish it which generates the roof.
Thickness of the roof – structure – edit – add layers and change
materials and layer thickness.
Height of the roof can be set by setting the height in properties by
changing levels / offset.
To make walls attach to the roof – select walls – attach top / base
and select the roof, make sure the roof overlaps the roof so the walls
can attach the roof.

17. Curtain Walls

Walls – properties – curtain walls – 3 types of walls – plain glass –

with grid – with panel
Curtain wall by face
Can’t be distributed or copied without prior permission from Lomos Enterprises Pvt Ltd

Can select one curtain panel and change materials for the same

18. Railing , ramp and stairs

Railing – sketch single line / loop. But single rail element at a time!
Rail – properties – edit type – baluster / rail structure – change
profile (new profile – new family – metric profile)

Ramp – always duplicate

Add ramp width – ramp slope (to be calculated) – set ramp max
inclined length – material of ramp in properties
Ramp can be open / close based – properties ramp – thick/solid
3 types of ramp – straight line, curved lines and ramp by sketch.

Stairs – Always remember to enter riser – width – tread depth as per

needed
Width in properties: Duplicate type and create new stairs always.
Multiple type of creating stairs – most useful is stairs by sketch
19. Model group – select elements – create group
Create group and model elements – made groups can be used as
group select and place it as required.
Model groups behave the same way as each other.
Model line – different types of line – same as annotate line
Remember line thickness is always as THIN LINES (TL)
Model text is always your 3D text to use in the model –
properties same as always!

20. Room
Create rooms – bounded by walls
Open rooms can be separated using room separating lines – once a
room TAG is deleted, use room tag command to tag the rooms again
Room tag properties can be changed in properties –
area/volume/number
Adding Legend
Annotate – colour fill legend – Space type: room, colour scheme :
name
Different names take different colour – select the legend edit type
and change the fill type or fill colour.

21. Linking and importing

Link models to use as it is – in project browser – revit links
Unlink and unload , edit – save and close, go to links in project
browser and reload
Once imported – select the import instance – in-case of not being
able to select it, right click zoom to fit – box the screen – filter –
select the .DWG file -import units – smallest unit used for drafting
and importing number: 1

22. Topo surface , building pad , split surfaces and contours

Define height / contours using topo surface points, make sure to
work only in the site plan to see things related to toposurface.
Use split surface to define your actual site / roads in site.
Change material in properties for the split surfaces.
